Titans Downed On The Road At Milwaukee In HL Opener

MILWAUKEE (9/15/2017) --The University of Detroit Mercy women's soccer team opened the Horizon League season against the defending regular season champions as the Titans were on the wrong end of a 1-0 decision on Friday night.

Milwaukee (8-0-1, 1-0-0 HL) came into the game without a loss all season and despite some tough defense from Detroit Mercy (2-6-1, 0-1-0 HL), the Titans could not drop the Panthers from the ranks of the unbeaten.

The game was scoreless at the half, but the Panthers were able to score in the 73rd minute. The Titans were close to tying the game up after that as junior Carly Fiorido's shot was over the goalie, but hit the crossbar just four minutes later.

Junior Marina Manzo had four saves on the night to push her season total to a Horizon League-best 52 on the season. Senior Rachel DeLuca and freshman Kelli Doyle led the offense with two shots apiece.

Detroit Mercy will return to action on Sunday, Sept. 17, as the red, white and blue welcome in-state foe Eastern Michigan to Titan Field. Game time is set for 5 p.m.

First Half
  • Milwaukee controlled the action for the first 30 minutes, but the Titans held their ground and seemed to take the momentum in the last 15.
  • The Panthers outshot the Titans, 8-5, but both squads had just one shot on goal that was saved.
  • Manzo came up with her save a little more than 20 minutes into the game.
  • The Titans had a chance in the 34th minute as the red, white and blue had a small breakaway, but that closed quickly and Doyle's shot was blocked.
  • Detroit Mercy had another strong scoring chance in the 39th minute as junior Caitlin Carroll sent in a curving shot that the Milwaukee keeper had to move quickly to her right to make the stop.

Second Half
  • Just like the first half, Milwaukee came out strong with five shots in the first 20 minutes.
  • Manzo had a save in the 53rd minute and then made a point-blank save with an offensive player right in her face as she ran out to deflect the ball in the 60th minute.
  • The Panthers got on the board at 65:35 as Manzo came up off a quick restart, but the Milwaukee player was able to slide one past her.
  • The Titans stopped the shooting barrage in the 73rd minute as freshman Laura Silverman sent a ball wide.
  • Detroit Mercy then had a great look at a goal off a Milwaukee foul, as the Titans attacked the offensive zone and Fiorido fired a shot that hit the crossbar with just over 13 minutes to go.

Game Notes
  • The Titans now trail the all-time series, 7-22-2, and have dropped 11 in a row to Milwaukee.
  • Manzo passed Erika Rust (1997-00) for fourth in school history with 231 career saves.
  • Fiorido made her 45th straight start.
