MORAGA, Calif. (9/2/2017) -- Rallying numerous times as a team on Saturday night, the University of Detroit Mercy men's soccer team earned a 3-3 road tie at Saint Mary's in the first contest away from Detroit of the 2017 season.
The Titans (2-0-1), playing most of the second half down a man on the field, trailed 3-2 after a Saint Mary's goal in the 74th minute. Detroit Mercy earned a corner kick in the closing seconds of the game and received a PK after
Dalton Amez (Macomb, Mich. / Chippewa Valley) was fouled in the box. Senior
Tyler Moorman (Caledonia, Mich. / East Kentwood) capitalized on the kick, converting with three seconds left on the clock to knot the game 3-3 and send it into overtime.
Detroit Mercy fended off several Saint Mary's chances in overtime and fought through two extra sessions to earn the road draw in 110 minutes. The Titans played 50 minutes down a man, scoring during that time and getting contributions from everyone who stepped onto the field.
"I'm not sure I've ever been more proud of a squad," Head coach Nicholas Deren '99 said. "Everyone contributed. That's a great team in Saint Mary's and I'm very pleased to come away with a point and get three goals."
Senior goalkeeper
Robbie Beckwell (Shelby Township, Mich. / Henry Ford II) was huge throughout the entire game and especially in the two, 10-minute extra sessions and finished the game with a total of nine saves, the second-highest total of his Titan career. Beckwell faced 29 shots in total, including 12 of them on net.
Detroit Mercy got first-half goals from seniors
Adam Clauss (Grand Haven, Mich. / Spring Lake) and
Spiro Pliakos (Rochester Hills, Mich. / Rochester). Clauss scored off a free kick to tie the game, 1-1, after Saint Mary's scored an early goal. After the Gaels went up 2-1, Pliakos was on the receiving end of a Moorman cross in the box and converted top shelf for his third goal of the 2017 season.
The Titans are unbeaten after three matches for the first time since the 2013 campaign, when Detroit Mercy began the season with three-straight draws.
The red, white and blue were out-shot 29-9, but scored on three of its four shots on goal. Pliakos led the team with four shots, while Moorman finished with two shots in the match. The Titans had three corner kicks, while the Gaels earned seven corners in the contest.
