INDIANAPOLIS (1/16/2018) -- Freshman
Jermaine Jackson Jr. had a game-high 22 points, and the Titans cut a 23-point second-half deficit down to just five, but the rally ended there as the University of Detroit Mercy men's basketball team fell, 81-66, to IUPUI at Indiana Farmers Coliseum on Tuesday.
It was the second-straight game Jackson Jr. has reached 20 or more points after his season-high 32 his last time out against Youngstown State.
Junior
Josh McFolley had 10 points and junior
Kameron Chatman finished with 10 points and a team-best nine rebounds.
Detroit Mercy (6-14. 2-5 HL) trailed 60-37 with 11:32 left when the red, white and blue went on a 25-7 spurt over the next seven minutes to pull within five, 67-62 with 4:22 remaining. IUPUI (7-11, 4-3 HL) was able to withstand that and never let the Titans get any closer.
The Titans forced 16 turnovers and had seven steals on the night, while connecting on 11, 3-pointers.
Senior
DeShawndre Black had a team-high four assists, sophomore
Corey Allen netted seven points and graduate senior
Roschon Prince ended with six points and four rebounds.Â
The Titans will return to action on Saturday, Jan. 20, as they host Oakland in the battle of the #MetroSeries, slated for a 4 p.m. tip inside historic Calihan Hall.Â

First Half:
- IUPUI took a 12-5 lead a little more than six minutes into the contest.
- A three by sophomore Cole Long cut it to three, 14-11, at the 11:52 mark.
- The Jaguars led, 21-11, with 9:23 left when the red, white and blue went on a run to trim it to four, 24-20, over the next three minutes.
- McFolley started that with a steal and layup and then Chatman got inside for two.
- After a basket by IUPUI, Black had a layup and then Chatman nailed a trey to make it a 24-20 game.
- The Titans also trailed by four at 26-22, with 5:34 remaining, but the Jaguars took a 45-26 advantage at the break.
- Jackson Jr. led the way with nine points at that point and Chatman had seven with five rebounds.Â
Second Half:Â
- Allen started to get it going scoring five-straight points as his 3-pointer had the team down 51-31 with 16 minutes left.
- IUPUI still kept its lead in the 20's, and the Jaguars were on top, 60-37, with 11:32 on the clock.
- The Titans started chipping away as sophomore Malik Eichler had a basket and McFolley added five points on a layup and a triple.
- Detroit Mercy found itself down 67-46 when the red, white and blue scored 16 in a row to get within two possessions.
- Jackson Jr. started that with a trey and then hit two free throws before Prince got inside for a bucket.
- Another trifecta by Jackson Jr. had the Titans down just 67-59 with 5:16 left, and after another defensive stand by Detroit Mercy, McFolley drilled one from long range to make it a 67-62 game at the 4:22 mark.
- IUPUI was able to stop that run and eventually pushed the game back to double figures.Â
Game Notes:
- Despite being separated by about 290 miles, this was the first career meeting between the two schools
- The Titans have now hit 10 or more 3-pointers in 10 games this season and are tied for first in the Horizon League with 9.1 triples per game, 75th in the nation
- Jackson Jr. is averaging 27.0 points in his last two games
- Chatman had missed the last three games with an undisclosed injury
- Chatman came into the game second in the Horizon League in rebounding at 8.8 per game
- Black now has nine assists in the last four games
- McFolley now has 141 career 3-pointers, six behind Juwan Howard Jr. '15 for ninth all-time in school history.
