Men’s Basketball Tripped Up At NKU

HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. (1/28/2018) -- Sophomore Corey Allen led the Titans with 11 points, but the Norse found their offense late in the first half as the University of Detroit Mercy men's basketball team was upended, 72-44, at NKU on Sunday afternoon.

Redshirt junior Kameron Chatman had six points and team-highs with 10 rebounds and three assists, while adding two steals. Graduate senior Roschon Prince had six points and five rebounds and junior Josh McFolley added eight points.

The Titans (6-17, 2-8 HL) trailed by just four, 18-14, late in the first half when NKU (15-7, 8-2 HL) went on a 13-0 run for a double-digit advantage.

The defense forced 17 turnovers – the most against Horizon League competition this season - on the day and sophomore Cole Long blocked a career-high three shots.

Detroit Mercy will be back in action this week as the Titans return home to face IUPUI on Friday, Feb. 2, and UIC on Sunday, Feb. 4.

First Half:
  • Just like the first time these two teams met, it was a slow start on offense as NKU was 1-of-7 and the Titans were 1-of-10 in the first five minutes.
  • McFolley had a couple of athletic layups early on as the Titans trailed 18-10 midway through the half.
  • The defense – which forced eight turnovers in the first 12 minutes - held the Norse scoreless for almost the next five minutes as a free throw from senior DeShawndre Black and a three from freshman Jack Ballantyne cut it to 18-14 with 4:50 remaining.
  • NKU then went on a 13-0 run and would take a 33-16 lead into the break.
  • Prince led the Titans with six points and five rebounds, while Chatman had six boards.
  • The team held NKU to 12-of-30 from the field and forced 10 turnovers.

Second Half:
  • NKU came out strong to start the second half and surged ahead, 54-22, at the 13:37 mark.
  • Allen scored five-straight points off a triple and a layup to trim it to 56-31.
  • Another trifecta from Allen made it 60-37 with 7:55 remaining.
  • Chatman had a steal and then slammed it down for a 64-40 contest late in the game.

Game Notes:
  • NKU leads the overall series, 5-1
  • The Titans had made 10 or more 3-pointers in five-straight game
  • The team's 17 forced turnovers were the third most on the season behind the 34 against Siena Heights and 20 versus Michigan-Dearborn
  • Chatman is looking to become just the sixth Titan since 1980 to lead the team in scoring and rebounding and has posted double-digit rebounds for the eighth time this season
  • Allen was in double figures in scoring for the 17th time in his 22 games
  • Long had two blocks twice in his career
