DETROIT (10/23/2018) -- It was a defensive battle between the University of Detroit Mercy men's soccer squad and Western Illinois and the visiting Leathernecks scored the game's lone goal in the 74th minute as the Titans fell 1-0 from Titan Field on Tuesday.

A cold and windy day yielded just one shot total in the first half between the two non-conference opponents, with junior Max Becker recording the only shot in the opening 45 minutes. A scoreless match for most of it, Western Illinois got on the scoreboard on a long cross from the sideline that was settled down in the box and then fired into the back of the net with 73:53 on the clock.

The Titans had just one shot on goal in the match and it came with just seconds remaining off a long throw-in by junior Dylan Fillwock. Fillwock's long throw-in reached the middle of the box and it was junior defender Garret Weaver who headed it on net but WIU keeper Tim Trilk was there for the save. It was the best look for Detroit Mercy on the afternoon.

Western Illinois totaled all nine of its shots after halftime and had a 9-4 advantage in the shot department. The Titans had the edge in corner kicks, 7-4. There was a total of 35 fouls whistled in the contest, 21 of them against the Leathernecks.

Freshman keeper Devin Mendez made three saves in net, all of them after the halftime break. He made a great sprawling save off a header that was sure to find the back of the net. He was making his 13th start of the 2018 season in net for Detroit Mercy.
