DETROIT (10/7/2018) -- The University of Detroit Mercy women's soccer team slowed down a high-powered Milwaukee offense all game long, but the Panthers were able to get one in the net as the Titans fell, 1-0, to the first place Horizon League squad on Sunday afternoon.
The game was initially scheduled for Saturday, but weather pushed the game to a Sunday match-up.
Milwaukee (11-1-0, 5-0-0 HL) and Detroit Mercy (3-7-3, 0-4-1 HL) were scoreless in the first half, but 11 minutes into the second, the visiting Panthers tallied their goal.
Senior
Marina Manzo made two saves on the day and senior
Carly Fiorido led the offense with a pair of shots.
Detroit Mercy will return to action on Tuesday when the red, white and blue hit the road for Northwood in a non-conference contest.
First Half:
- Both teams had opportunities early in the game, getting the ball in their scoring zone, but neither could get a shot off
- Milwaukee had a shot blocked in the 16th minute and one sail high in the 20th
- Sophomore Kelli Doyle had a header attempt go high at 20:50
- Mano intercepted a pair of crosses on corner kicks during the first half
- Fiorido sent a shot towards the keeper from 30 yards out in the 41st minute
Second Half
- The Titans had some early pressure as a shot was blocked, setting up a corner kick
- Milwaukee had a shot on goal saved at 51:23, but a few minutes later, the Panthers found the back of the net
- The Panthers also had another shot hit the crossbar in the 69th minute and one that Manzo turned away at 79:04
Game Notes:
- The Titans trail the all-time series, 7-23-2 and have dropped 12-straight games to Milwaukee
- Milwaukee came into the game leading the Horizon League with 2.45 goals per game and 19.73 shots per game
- Manzo still leads the Horizon League with 86 saves and 6.88 saves per game, which rank third and 14th in the nation, respectively
