Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Davis, 3-Point Shooting Power Detroit Mercy to Legends Classic Subregional Title

DETROIT (11/20/2018) -- Freshman Antoine Davis scored a game-high 32 points and added six assists and six rebounds as the University of Detroit Mercy men's basketball team clipped the Bowling Green Falcons, 82-67, on Tuesday night in the Gotprint.Com Legends Classic Subregional Championship game, presented by Old Trapper.

It was a standout encore performance for Davis, as he scored a combined 73 points and made 18 3-pointers across the two subregional games held at Calihan Hall. The Legends Classic Subregional MVP scored a Titans freshman-record 42 points in Monday's win over Loyola Maryland, and his 10 triples tied a school record.

In all, three Titans (2-3) scored in double figures, as senior Josh McFolley (18 points) and graduate student Derrien King (14 points) joined Davis. McFolley went 8-for-10 from the charity stripe and drilled a pair of 3-pointers, while King was a perfect 2-for-2 from the line with four triples.

King also led Detroit Mercy with seven rebounds and was named to the All-Tournament Team. Senior Gerald Blackshear Jr. added five boards and freshman Boe Nguidjol grabbed four caroms.

One night after Detroit Mercy tied a school record with 17 threes, the Titans managed to dial up 15 triples to sink Bowling Green. Davis led the way with eight, and the Titans shot 55.6 percent from three.

Bowling Green (3-3) never held a lead in the contest. The Falcons managed to tie the game at 6-6 early in the first half but the Titans' fiery shooting propelled them to a commanding lead.

Despite their prowess on the boards — Bowling Green out-rebounded Detroit Mercy 47-35 and 18-4 on the offensive end  — the Falcons struggled to get things going offensively, shooting just 36.5 percent on field goals and 21.7 percent from behind the arc.

Detroit Mercy took prime advantage of several Bowling Green miscues, scoring 21 points off the Falcons' 11 turnovers and this time, the red, white and blue used the charity stripe to its advantage connecting on a season-high 17-of-24.

Another Mid-American Conference foe awaits Detroit Mercy, as the Titans will travel to Ypsilanti, Mich. to face Eastern Michigan (4-2) on Saturday, November 24 at 2 p.m.

First Half

  • Coming off a historic shooting performance the night prior, Davis wasted little time in his encore, draining a triple for the game's first points and another to start a lengthy run for the Titans
  • The score was briefly tied, 6-6, early in the first half, before the Titans erupted for a 17-4 run. A Davis 3-pointer kicked off the run and Detroit Mercy held a 23-10 lead at the 10-minute mark
  • Over the next three minutes, Bowling Green pulled within 10 points of Detroit Mercy, 26-16, but the Titans offense heated up again, with Davis nailing a pair of 3-pointers and King and McFolley each converting from downtown to push the lead to 42-25
  • Nguidjol scored his first collegiate points on a layup with 30 seconds left in the first half, giving the Titans a 21-point advantage, their biggest of the half
  • Detroit Mercy made nine three pointers in the first half, shooting 56 percent from behind the arc, and entered halftime with a commanding 46-27 lead over Bowling Green
  • The Titans held the Falcons to 11-for-39 shooting from the field (28 percent) and 1-for-12 on 3-point attempts (8.3 percent) in the first half, but Bowling Green held a 25-16 edge in rebounds, headlined by a 13-1 advantage on the offensive end

Second Half

  • The Titans shooting didn't cool off at the break, as graduate student Jacob Holland and King drained threes in the first two minutes of the second half, pushing the lead to 27 points
  • Bowling Green rattled off five unanswered points before McFolley converted on a layup, pushing him to double figures in points on the night
  • Back-to-back layups by Nguidjol clipped a 10-2 run by the Falcons, which saw Detroit Mercy's lead shrink to 15 points at 65-50
  • McFolley scored seven of the Titans' final nine points as Detroit Mercy cruised to the 15-point victory
  • Redshirt senior Musial Gjysma made his Calihan Hall debut in the closing minutes of the contest, logging two minutes

Notes

  • The Titans honored former head coach and All-American Bob Calihan with a Legend Plaque that was given to his daughter Colleen Calihan
  • Detroit Mercy along with Michigan First Credit Union also presented Detroit Public Schools with a check from the money made during the City College Series
  • This was the Titans third subregional title since 2009 as they claimed the 2K Sports Classic Benefiting Coaches vs. Cancer Albany Subregional in 2009 and the 2010 Progressive Legends Classic at home
  • Detroit Mercy won back-to-back games by double digits for the first time since 2015 when it beat Milwaukee, 83-67, and Oakland, 74-54.
  • Detroit Mercy sank 32 treys in the event, tying a school record with 17 against Loyola Maryland
  • The 17 free throws made in the game were the most since Detroit Mercy had 21 in a home win over UIC last season
  • The Titan defense held their second-straight foe to under 40.0-percent shooting
  • Davis averaged 37.0 points shooting 59.5 percent from the field and 69.2 percent from three with 5.5 assists, 4.5 rebounds
  • King averaged 15.5 points, 5.5 rebounds and 2.0 assists, while nailing eight triples in the two games
  • McFolley's 18 points moved him into a tie for 29th all-time in school history in scoring with Brice Rodwan (1964-68) and just nine behind Michael Jackson for 28th
  • King's seven rebounds matched a career high he had while at Washington State against Central Washington in 2016
  • Davis' six rebounds and six steals were season highs
  • Davis has now scored 30 or more in four of his first five games and has netted at least 20 in every outing this season.
