DETROIT (2/1/2018) -- The 3-pointers fell early and often for the University of Detroit Mercy women's basketball team on Thursday, but the Titans were unable to fend off visiting Cleveland State in a 90-76 setback from Calihan Hall.

The Titans sank a season-high 15 triples in the game overall, just one off the school record set twice last season. Detroit Mercy connected on 10 treys in the first half alone. Senior Nicole Urbanick and sophomore Anja Marinkovic each hit five triples, while freshman Lexey Tobel connected on four 3-pointers.

Urbanick led the team with 17 points with Tobel (16 points) and Marinkovic (15 points) just behind in double figures. Junior guard Brittney Jackson added seven assists, senior Brianne Cohen had eight points and seven rebounds and sophomore Zoey Oatis added four steals and three blocks.

The Vikings took an early lead, but Detroit Mercy hit five 3-pointers in the opening quarter, three of them by Urbanick in the final 101 seconds of the stanza. Urbanick's last triple came with one second on the clock as Detroit Mercy trailed 28-23 after one.

Tobel opened the second quarter with another 3-pointer and Marinkovic added back-to-back treys midway through the frame to trim a 12-point deficit to six points, 38-32. Detroit Mercy closed the quarter on a 14-2 run started by Marinkovic's two 3's and finished with 3-pointers by Urbanick and Gracie Roberts. Roberts' trey came just before the halftime buzzer and tied the game at the break, 40-40.

Cleveland State began the second half on a 10-0 run, but Detroit Mercy wouldn't go away with Marinkovic again hitting back-to-back triples to pull the Titans to within six, 58-52, with 4:19 left in the third. CSU's Khayla Livingston, however, had a hot shooting night of her own from downtown and sank three triples in the remaining minutes of the third to help the Vikings to a 71-59 advantage after three.

The Titans went 3-for-3 from beyond the arc to open the fourth with Urbanick hitting the first and Tobel sinking back-to-back triples and Detroit Mercy trimmed the Vikings lead to nine, 81-72, with 3:12 left after a Cohen bucket. The Vikings pulled away down the stretch, however, for the win.

Detroit Mercy shot 43.5 percent in the game (27-for-62) and went 15-of-31 from 3-point range (48 percent). The Titans had 18 assists, seven from Jackson, who was one off her career-high. Detroit Mercy also had five blocks and eight steals, four by Oatis.

Marinkovic was 5-of-7 from downtown and Urbanick shot 5-of-11 from beyond the arc for the Titans.

The 15 triples were the most 3-pointers made in a game since last season in a victory over Green Bay, when the Titans tied the school-record with 16 treys. In that game, Urbanick and Marinkovic combined to go 9-for-9 from downtown.
