Logan Shamblin made 11 saves as the University of Detroit Mercy men's lacrosse team threatened an upset at No. 6/6 Notre Dame, falling to the Fighting Irish, 10-7, on Sunday afternoon.
Vangalen tallied two goals and three assists. Sophomore
Seth Mendell added a goal and an assist and senior
Charlie Hayes and freshman
Brennan Kamish each had a marker.
Junior
Sam Horton posted a career-high three caused turnovers and sophomore
Alex Akins recorded a pair as the Titan defense saw Notre Dame commit 21 turnovers on the day.
The Titans outshot the Fighting Irish, 34-25, and were 19-of-21 on the clear.
Detroit Mercy will be back in action next week, Feb. 18, when the red, white and blue visit Mercer.
First Period:
- The game was scoreless for the first nine minutes when Notre Dame got on the board at the 5:58 mark.
- A little more than a minute later off a save from Shamblin, Hayes picked up the ground ball and streaked across the field, beating the UND keeper for the first goal of the season.
- The Titans trailed 2-1 after the first, but the defense saw Notre Dame turn the ball over 10 times.
Second Period:
- The Titans were down 3-1 early in the period when they took advantage of a Notre Dame penalty as Vangalen fed Ducharme and he fired one in at the 9:46 mark.
- With 4:08 left, Vangalen intercepted a pass and unleashed a shot on an almost vacant net, beating the keeper from 30 yards out to knot it all up at 3-3.
- It looked as though the Titans would go into the half down 4-3, but Vangalen was able to get another caused turnover and he found Mendell, who found the back of the net with just two seconds left for a 4-4 game at the break.
- At the half, the Titans were outshooting Notre Dame, 18-9, had an 11-9 edge in ground balls and saw the Fighting Irish post 15 turnovers.
Third Period:
- Shamblin had a couple of saves to keep the Fighting Irish off the scoreboard and that allowed the Titans to take the lead.
- Redshirt freshman Matt Turner was able to locate Kamish at the top of the key and he laced one into the net for a 5-4 lead with 9:51 left.
- Almost two minutes later with Hayes causing a turnover, Mendell set up Vangalen and his goal had the squad up 6-4.
- Shamblin had two more saves in the period as the Titans led 6-5 after three
Fourth Period:
- Notre Dame was able to stymie the Titan offense and start the last stanza with five-straight goals, taking a 10-6 lead with 4:36 remaining.
- The last Titan goal came from Ducharme off an assist from Vangalen at the 3:42 mark.
Game Notes:
- The Titans are now 0-3 all-time against Notre Dame and all three games have been on the road
- Detroit Mercy is 0-14 all-time against top-20 teams
- The Titan led Notre Dame, 7-3, after three periods in the 2013 NCAA Tournament only to see the Fighting Irish end the game on a 6-0 run
- Detroit Mercy was outshot by an opponent in 11 of its 15 games last season
- Vangalen had five points on three assists and two goals in the season opener last year at Ohio State
- Ducharme posted two goals for the fourth time in his career
