Titans Cage Red Foxes In League Opener

DETROIT (3/17/2018) -- Junior Patrick Walsh tallied a career-high three goals, sophomore Alex Jarzembowski tied a school record with 16 faceoff wins and the Titans used a dominating 13-3 run to take complete control of the game as the University of Detroit Mercy men's lacrosse team opened its MAAC schedule with a 14-10 victory over Marist on Titan Field on Saturday.

Marist (1-8, 0-1 MAAC) scored the first three goals of the game, but Detroit Mercy (3-5, 1-0 MAAC) answered with a 5-0 run to start and a 4-0 run to cap its 13-3 charge over 41 minutes.

Six other Titans scored with junior Matthew Vangalen and sophomore Seth Mendell posting two goals and an assist. Freshman Brett Erskine also had two goals, while seniors Sean Birney and Lucas Ducharme and redshirt freshman Matt Turner each had a goal and an assist.

Senior Charlie Hayes had a caused turnover and a career-high nine ground balls. Junior Sam Horton registered two caused turnovers and redshirt freshman Logan Shamblin made nine saves in net.

The Titans won 17 of 27 faceoffs led by Jarzembowski's 16-of-25 effort.

Detroit Mercy outshot Marist, 47-31, hustled to a 31-19 edge in ground balls and was 13-of-14 on clears.

The red, white and blue will now head to the east coast to face defending MAAC champion Monmouth next Saturday, Mar. 24, with game time set for Noon.

First Period:
  • Marist took a 3-0 lead a little less than four minutes into the game when Walsh ignited a Titan run with his first goal.
  • Shamblin made a couple of saves to keep the Red Foxes off the scoreboard after that, and he also made three saves in the final two minutes.
  • Alec Gilhooly fired one in with the man-up at 7:51 and Vangalen's first marker knotted the score at 3-3 with 4:20 left and that is how the period concluded.

Second Period:
  • Erskine got into the action with a goal at 9:20 to put the team up 4-3 and then Turner fed the rookie and he beat the goalie again at the 8:46 mark.
  • After a Marist goal, Birney and Ducharme each found the back of the net as the Titans took a 7-5 lead into the half.

Third Period:
  • Walsh continued the Titan offensive assault with a goal at 13:45 and just two minutes later, freshman Brennan Kamish set up Walsh and he had his hat trick and the Titan led 10-5 with 9:20 remaining in the third.
  • Off a faceoff win, Ducharme located Erskine and he then netted his hat trick for an 11-5 advantage with 9:03 left in the period.
  • The Titans ended the third with authority as Mendell scored with 20 seconds on the clock and then Hayes put one in with just six seconds remaining as the Titans took a 13-6 lead.

Fourth Period:
  • The Titans saw Marist make a small push at a comeback, but Vangalen's second strike put an end to that as Detroit Mercy had a 14-10 lead with 2:30 left.

Game Notes:
  • The Titans ended a four-game slide to Marist as they trail the all-time series, 7-5
  • Detroit Mercy is 6-2 all-time in MAAC openers
  • The 47 shots are tied for the fifth-most in school history and are the most since Detroit Mercy recorded a school-record 58 against Manhattan in 2015
  • Jarzembowski tied Brandon Davenport's school record of 16 wins as he posted that number twice, both times against Robert Morris in 2010 and 2011.
  • Walsh scored a then career-high two goals at Marist last year
  • Hayes' nine ground balls are tied for eighth in school history and were the most by a Titan since Ben Gjokaj had 10 at Ohio State last season
