Titans Fall In High Scoring MAAC Contest

PONTIAC, Mich. (3/31/2018) -- Sophomore Seth Mendell tallied his third career hat trick and junior Michael Turnbull made his first collegiate start in net and posted 14 saves as the University of Detroit Mercy men's lacrosse team dropped a 14-11 shootout to visiting Quinnipiac at Wisner Stadium on Saturday.

Turnbull – who was making just his second collegiate appearance – had six saves in the first period alone and also picked up a team-high seven ground balls.

Mendell led the team with three goals, while senior Alec Gilhooly had a goal and two assists. Sophomore Matt Turner had a season-high two goals, senior Lucas Ducharme handed out two assists and junior Patrick Walsh and freshman Brett Erskine each had a goal and a helper.

Seniors Charlie Hayes and Pat Masterson recorded a caused turnover and six ground balls apiece and sophomore Alex Jarzembowski won 15-of-25 faceoffs – one off his career high and school record – including 8-of-10 in the fourth quarter.

Detroit Mercy (4-6, 2-1 MAAC) trailed 2-0 early, but stormed back with five-straight goals to take a 5-2 lead in the second and a 5-3 advantage at the break. Quinnipiac (5-5, 2-0 MAAC) came back with five-straight markers to jump out in front, 7-5, with five minutes left in the third period.

Back-to-back goals by Mendell and Turner at 13:22 and 11:42 in the fourth saw the red, white and blue tie the game at 9-9, but the Bobcats were able to get the lead back and squeak out the win.

Detroit Mercy was 18-of-22 on clears and outshot Quinnipiac, 42-40, but also had 21 turnovers.

The Titans will be back in action next Saturday, Apr. 7, when Detroit Mercy visits MAAC and Jesuit-rival Canisius in a 7 p.m. start in Buffalo, New York.

First Period:
  • Despite four early saves from Turnbull, Quinnipiac led 2-0 just five minutes into the contest.
  • The Titans got on the board as a Jarzembowski faceoff victory led to Erskine's lone goal of the day at 9:22.
  • Detroit Mercy then tied it up as a Quinnipiac turnover led to Walsh assisting on Turner's first strike.
  • Turnbull made two more saves after that and also had a caused turnover as the game was knotted at 2-2 after 15 minutes.

Second Period:
  • Jarzembowski won the opening faceoff in the second and that led to a goal by Mendell at the 14:09 mark.
  • Jarzembowski's strong play led to another win and not even a minute later, the Titans went up 4-2 as Gilhooly set up Walsh for a goal.
  • Detroit Mercy then took advantage of a Quinnipiac penalty and Gilhooly located senior Sean Birney, and he ripped one past the keeper for a 5-2 lead with 12:01 left.
  • Turnbull had a couple of more saves and senior Will Kane had a caused turnover down the stretch as the Titans took a 5-3 lead at the break.

Third Period:
  • Quinnipiac went on a run in the third and went ahead by two, 7-5, with 5:03 remaining.
  • Masterson ended that as his caused turnover led to a goal from freshman Brennan Kamish as Ducharme assisted on the play with 3:38 left.
  • With less than a minute to go, Hayes had a caused turnover and the ball eventually made its way to Erskine, who got Mendell in position for his second goal of the game and the Titans trailed 8-7 after three.

Fourth Period:
  • The Bobcats led 9-7 early in the period when Mendell registered his hat trick with 13:22 on the clock to make it a one-goal game.
  • After another Jarzembowski faceoff win, Ducharme set up Turner and his marker tied it at 9-9 with 11:42 remaining.
  • Quinnipiac went up by two again at 11-9, but the Titans used their man-up attack to get the deficit back to one as Hayes fed junior Matthew Vangalen and his tally made it 11-10 with 8:19 left.
  • Quinnipiac notched two more goals to extend the lead when Gilhooly scored at the 1:53 mark.

Game Notes:
  • Quinnipiac leads the all-time match-up, 8-2, and is 5-0 on the road in the series.
  • It is the second time that a Titan goalie has made his first collegiate start against Quinnipiac as Damie Danseglio started and earned a win in a 13-10 road victory in 2012
  • Turnbull's 14 saves are the most by a Titan in his first start in net since Jason Weber made 16 saves at VMI in 2014 and Connor Flynn's 16 saves against Mercer, also in 2014
  • Birney is now tied with Scott Harris for seventh in school history with nine man-up goals
  • Masterson now has 103 career ground balls
  • Walsh now has a career-high 12 goals
  • Mendell had six goals against Bellarmine and four at Siena last season
  • Vangalen now has sole possession of 10th in school history with 66 points and is tied for 10th with Kyle Beauregard with 35 career goals
  • Jarzembowski won 16-of-25 faceoffs to tie a school record against Marist two weeks ago and is 55-of-88 (62.5%) in his last four games
