Titans Edged By #4/6 Ohio State

PONTIAC, Mich. (3/4/3018) -- The University of Detroit Mercy men's lacrosse team got off to a red-hot start, but nationally-ranked Ohio State used a second-half run for the comeback at the Titans dropped an exciting 8-7 contest to the Buckeyes in the final game of the Midwest Classic on Sunday afternoon.

The event was held at historic Wisner Stadium in Pontiac and was part of a great day of lacrosse as Bellarmine upset #19/RV Marquette, 7-6, in the first game of the day.

Redshirt freshman Logan Shamblin had a season-high 14 saves for the second-straight game and the Titan defense caused nine of Ohio State's 16 turnovers, led by two apiece from senior Will Kane and junior Sam Horton. Shamblin also led the way with a season-high six ground balls, while senior Pat Masterson had a caused turnover and five ground balls and Kane picked up three GB's.

Junior Patrick Walsh and freshman Brennan Kamish each had two goals and junior Matthew Vangalen ended with four points on a goal and three assists. 

Detroit Mercy (2-4) scored three goals in the first 12 minutes and had a 3-0 lead after the first quarter. The Titans then led 6-3 at the half when Ohio State (5-1) netted five-straight to take the lead.

The Titans were outshot, 35-24. Detroit Mercy was 1-of-2 on the extra-man attack and 19-of-21 on clears.

The red, white and blue will have a week off before facing Air Force next Sunday, March 11, at the new time of 11 a.m. on Titan Field. 

First Period:
  • Shamblin recorded his first save just a minute in and after an Ohio State turnover, sophomore Matt Turner found Kamish and he scored at the 11:38 mark.
  • Off a caused turnover from senior Charlie Hayes, the Titans fired two shots on OSU before senior Alec Gilhooly took a pass from Vangalen and beat the keeper with 8:22 left.
  • The Titan defense ended three more Ohio State possessions with caused turnovers by Masterson, sophomore Alex Akins and Kane, and also killed off a 30-second penalty over the next five minutes when Kamish had an unassisted marker with 3:19 remaining to give the Titans a 3-0 lead.
  • Kane had another caused turnover and Shamblin made two more saves in the final three minutes.

Second Period:
  • Shamblin had another save early on, but on a penalty, Ohio State got on the board with 11:40 on the scoreboard and added another goal just three minutes later.
  • Horton came up with a caused turnover and after a Titan clear, Vangalen fed Hayes and he scored to make it 4-3 with 5:56 left.
  • After an OSU marker, the Titans went up by two again, 5-3, as senior Lucas Ducharme set up Vangalen for a strike and that is how it went into the half.

Third Period:
  • Off a penalty, the Titans went up 6-3 as senior Sean Birney's pass helped get Walsh a look and he beat the goalie.
  • The defense was holding strong with Shamblin coming up with a pair of saves, but Ohio State scored on the extra-man with 9:20 remaining and added another goal nearly a minute later before tying the game at 6-6 at the 7:27 mark.
  • Shamblin made four more saves the rest of the period and the defense had two caused turnovers as the game was knotted at 6-6.

Fourth Period:
  • The Buckeyes went ahead with a goal with 11:55 left and then took an 8-6 lead with just 3:52 on the clock.
  • Off a faceoff win, the Titans trimmed that to one, as Vangalen hooked up with Walsh and his second goal made it 8-7 with 3:17 left.
  • Shamblin made one more save, but the Titans only got one more shot the rest of the way.

Game Notes:
  • Detroit Mercy is 1-8 all-time against Ohio State, which includes a pair of one-goal games
  • The Titans are 0-16 all-time against nationally-ranked teams, including 0-8 all-time versus top-10 teams.
  • Kamish has scored two goals in three games this season
  • Vangalen is now eighth in school history with 29 career assists
  • Hayes and Masterson are both tied for eighth in school history with 86 career ground balls
  • Masterson is now seventh in school history with 31 career caused turnovers
  • Shamblin made 28 saves in the two-game Midwest Classic
