SPARTANBURG, S.C. (4/13/2018) -- The University of Detroit Mercy women's lacrosse team won its third-straight game Friday afternoon with junior attacker
Lexie Kinmond breaking school records in the process. Fittingly on Friday the 13th, Kinmond broke the single-game school records in both points and assists, totaling 13 points and also setting a new mark in assists with eight.
Detroit Mercy improved to 7-6 overall and 2-1 in Southern Conference play with the victory. The Titans have two more SoCon games left during the regular season, playing at Furman tomorrow at 4 p.m. and then hosting Central Michigan in the Titans' regular-season and home finale on Saturday, April 28.
With the triumph, the Titans have all but secured a spot in the inaugural SoCon Women's Lacrosse Championship. The top four teams in the six-team Southern Conference qualify for the postseason tournament.
Kinmond broke the school-record for points, held by former Titan standout Anna Eidem, who notched 11 points (nine goals, two assists) in a win over Presbyterian during the first season of Detroit Mercy women's lacrosse back in 2009. Kinmond set a new mark in assists, which was just broken last week by Titan freshman midfielder
Meredith Moore, who had seven in a 23-10 victory over Howard.
To go along with Kinmond's five goals, eight assists and 13 points, redshirt sophomore midfielder
Kaitlyn Wandelt tallied a career-best seven goals, scoring on seven of her nine shots. She surpassed 40 goals on the season in the process. Junior
Morgan Girardi added three goals and four points, while Moore also had a hat trick with three goals.
The Titans got off to a furious start against Wofford, scoring five times in the first six minutes to open a 5-1 lead and forcing the Terriers to call a timeout. Senior
Jordyn Beam opened the scoring with Kinmond following with her first goal. Senior
Jessica Snyder followed with her 13th of the season and then Wandelt scored two-straight goals.
After a Wofford goal, Detroit Mercy scored four of the next five markers with Kinmond scoring twice and Girardi and Moore each tallying goals as the Titans led 9-3 after the 4-1 run. Detroit Mercy also closed out the opening half strong, scoring the final five goals of the stanza. Kinmond had three points during the stretch and Wandelt scored twice as she scored goal No. 40 on the season just before the halftime break.
At halftime, the Titans held a 14-5 lead and Kinmond had nine points on four goals and five assists, while Wandelt had four goals.
The Titans continued their offensive dominance early in the second half with Detroit Mercy scoring six times before Wofford could find the back of the net. Wandelt scored her fifth goal of the game just 36 seconds into the second and Moore added another just minutes later. Both goals came off assists from Kinmond, who had tied the school-record for points in a game (11) with her two helpers.
Kinmond broke the school record for points with 20:29 left in the contest, ripping a shot past Wofford goalkeeper Kelsey Thompson for her fifth goal and 12th point of the contest. She then broke the school-record for assists, earning her eighth on Wandelt's career-high seventh goal of the game with 4:59 remaining on the clock. Freshmen
Kristina Ellis and
Kamryn Corraro each scored in the second half as eight different Titans scored in the contest.
Detroit Mercy out-shot Wofford in the contest, 36-19, and also held the advantage in ground balls (19-11) and draw controls (16-15). The Titans were again effective on clears going a perfect 21-for-21 during the game. The Titans also scored on all three free-position shots.
Junior goalkeeper
Allison McDonough made 10 saves in the contest, her seventh 10-plus save game of the season. Kinmond had a team-best three caused turnovers in addition to her big day offensively. Wandelt had a team-best with three ground balls, while senior
