NORFOLK, Va. (4/22/2018) -- Using another come-from-behind effort on the road, the University of Detroit Mercy women's lacrosse squad picked up an 18-14 non-conference victory at Old Dominion on Sunday. The Titans out-scored the Monarchs 8-1 in the second half in the triumph.
With the win, Detroit Mercy improved to 9-7 overall and evened its mark on the road this season at 5-5. It's the third time in the 10-year history of Detroit Mercy women's lacrosse that the Titans have reached nine victories in a season. The Titans have also secured their third winning season in program history.
The Titans trailed 13-10 at the halftime break after a high-scoring opening 30 minutes between the two opponents, who as recently as last season were foes in the ASUN Conference. Detroit Mercy scored the first five goals of the second half, however, to quickly erase the deficit and take the lead for good.
Redshirt sophomore midfielder
Kaitlyn Wandelt scored all five of her goals in the second half, opening a 5-0 run for Detroit Mercy with a goal just 1:17 into the second frame. Classmate
Lexie Kinmond scored just 17 seconds later as Detroit Mercy was suddenly down just one, 13-12, with 28 minutes left.
Neither team was able to score for the next 10 minutes as stout defense was played, but the Titans tied the game up 13-13 at the 17:48 mark after Kinmond converted on a free-position opportunity, her fourth goal of the game. Wandelt then scored back-to-back goals in a span of 31 seconds and the Titans closed the 5-0 run up 15-13 with 16:39 remaining.
After Old Dominion's lone goal of the second half, the Titans closed the game with three more goals. Wandelt scored again with 9:03 left and then junior
Morgan Girardi completed her hat trick with her 38th goal of the season. Wandelt sealed the victory with 1:41 left, tallying her fifth goal of the game and 56th of the season.
Four Titans in all had hat tricks. Senior
Jessica Snyder, who scored all four of her goals in the first half, tallied a season-high four markers. Wandelt had five goals, Kinmond finished with four and Girardi added three. Wandelt had eight points and Kinmond had seven as the duo combined for six assists.
The Titans trailed 7-3 early, but used a 5-1 run in the first half to knot the game 8-8. Five different Titans scored during the run -- freshman
Meredith Moore, Kinmond, junior
Emma Leszczak, Girardi and Snyder. After ODU then went up 12-8, Kinmond and Snyder scored back-to-back to again close the deficit.
In all, Detroit Mercy scored 10 of the final 12 goals of the contest after Old Dominion led 12-8 with 4:01 left in the first half.
The Titans corralled 18 draw controls, which was the second-highest total of the season. Wandelt and freshman
Kristina Ellis were both keys on the draw as both tallied seven draw controls during the game. Moore added two DC. The Titans also had 13 caused turnovers with goalkeeper
Allison McDonough totaling a team-best three caused turnovers. Sophomore midfielder
Tegan McManus added two caused turnovers.
McDonough posted three ground balls and turned away six shots as the Titan defense allowed just one goal in the final 30 minutes. Detroit Mercy out-shot Old Dominion in the second half, 22-12 and in the game, 37-32. The red, white and blue were 19-of-23 on clears and were only whistled for 12 fouls.
It was the second-straight victory against Old Dominion after winning at home on Senior Day last season. The Titans have won five of their past six games.
Detroit Mercy's 221 goals on the season is third-most all-time and just 14 away from the single-season record. The Titans also set a new school record for points in a season with 321 (221 goals, 100 assists). The red, white and blue already set a new school record in assists earlier this season.
