YPSILANTI, Mich. (8/24/2018) -- Freshman
Julie Ann Piechocki netted the first Titan goal of 2018 with her first collegiate marker, but Eastern Michigan struck for two first-half scores in a 2-1 victory over the red, white and blue on Friday.
Piechocki was able to create some space between on her defender and fired a shot from just outside the box in the 70th minute.
Senior
Marina Manzo tallied seven saves for Detroit mercy (0-2) as Eastern Michigan (1-2) posted a 22-8 shots advantage. Piechocki had four shots in the contest, while freshman
Nasreen Kobeissi had three on the day.
The Titans will return to action this Sunday, Aug. 26, as Detroit Mercy welcomes Central Michigan for its home opener at 4 p.m. All fans can receive posters and schedule magnets, while students with a valid school ID are invited to a pizza party prior to the game at 3:30.
First Half
- Eastern Michigan had four shots in the first 12 minutes with Manzo picking up a save
- Kobeissi had a shot attempt in the 10th minute
- The Eagles hit the crossbar on one shot and Manzo made a pair of saves at 22:14 and 27:31
- EMU had its first goal in the 40th minute off a penalty kick
- The Eagles tacked on another goal with less than 10 seconds left as a corner kick stayed in play and EMU was able to knock it in
Second Half
- Detroit Mercy came out aggressive with a couple of shots on goal in the first eight minutes
- After Manzo made a save at 68:41, the Titans were able to push the ball up and Piechocki got the ball on the left side and was able to run away from her defender and create some space for a boot from just outside the box that beat the keeper to her left at 69:52
- Manzo kept the deficit at one with saves in the 80th, 81st and 82nd minute
- The Titans were not able to get another shot on goal in the final 10 minutes
Game Notes
- The series is now tied at 9-9-4
- Last year, a freshman also scored the first goal of the season for the Titans as Rachel Russo netted three at Fort Wayne
- Manzo now has 281 career saves, eight behind Nikki Thomas '96 for third place in school history
