CHICAGO (9/13/2018) -- The University of Detroit Mercy women's soccer team opened up Horizon League play with a tough 2-0 setback at UIC on Thursday night.
UIC (1-8-0, 1-0-0 HL) had a goal in the 15th minute and another late in the game to trip up Detroit Mercy (2-4-2, 0-1-0 HL), who came into the game unbeaten in its last three outings.Â

Marina Manzo made five saves. Freshman
Julie Ann Piechocki led the offense with two shots, while senior
Carly Fiorido, sophomore
Kelli Doyle and freshman
Nasreen Kobeissi had one attempt.
The Titans will be back in action next Tuesday, Sept. 18, when the red, white and blue host Madonna in a non-conference match-up.Â
First Period
- Piechocki had the first shot of the game a little more than a minute into the contest, but it was saved
- UIC came up with a goal in the 14th minute off a corner kick
- The Titans had two corners after that and one led to a shot from Koebeissi, but that was stopped
- Manzo kept the deficit at one with a save at 18:56
- Piechocki had another attempt that was turned away in the 41st minute
Second Period
- Manzo kept UIC at bay, turning away a scoring opportunity in the 60th minute
- Doyle had a chance to tie it up at 71:33, but her header was stopped by the goalie
- The Flames tried to extend their lead, but two more saves by Manzo were registered in the 79th and 82nd minute
- The Titan keeper made two more saves in the next five minutes until UIC added its second goal with just 41 seconds left
