Men's Soccer Falls 1-0 in Horizon League Opener

INDIANAPOLIS (9/8/2018) -- The University of Detroit Mercy men's soccer team dropped its Horizon League opener on Saturday night, falling 1-0 on the road at IUPUI. The Titans were playing their fifth-straight road match to open the 2018 season.

The Jaguars (1-2-1) scored the only goal of the game in the 73rd minute on a rainy night from Carroll Stadium in Indianapolis.

Detroit Mercy out-shot IUPUI in the game, 13-10, and had 12 corner kicks to the Jaguars' six. Sophomore Demetri Pliakos fired a shot just high of the crossbar off a cross from junior Justin Schueneman with just seconds remaining in the match. Pliakos and sophomore Justin Murray each had three shots in the contest.

Sophomore Mohamad Miri added two shots for the Titans. Freshman goalkeeper Evan Mazurek made his third consecutive start in net for Detroit Mercy and turned away five shots. Mazurek has made 11 saves total in the past two matches for the Titans.

IUPUI out-shot the Titans 6-5 in the first half, but Detroit Mercy had an 8-4 shot advantage in the second half. The red, white and blue had eight of its 12 corner kicks in the first half, four of them in the final eight minutes of the opening half.

Detroit Mercy had a golden opportunity in the 83rd minute of the match when junior Jake Reitzloff was fouled in the box. Miri stepped up for the penalty kick and fired a shot that glanced off the right post and deflected out of bounds. Pliakos had two shots in the final 90 seconds of the match, including his shot that went just high of the crossbar in the final minute of the contest.

Detroit Mercy opens the home schedule next Saturday, hosting Metro Series rival Oakland from Titan Field in a 1 p.m. contest. Admission for all fans is free.
