Davis, McFolley Combine For 58 points, Power Titans To Rout Of Green Bay

DETROIT (1/10/19) -- Freshman Antoine Davis and senior Josh McFolley combined for 58 points and the University of Detroit Mercy men's basketball team routed Green Bay, 101-83, Thursday night at Calihan Hall.

The Titans (7-10, 4-1 HL) led 53-40 at halftime, but 14 unanswered points out of the break pushed the red, white and blue to the 18-point victory.

With the win, Detroit Mercy starts Horizon League play with a 4-1 mark for the first time since the 2010-2011 campaign. Green Bay (9-8, 3-1 HL) entered the contest atop the league standings with a then-unblemished 3-0 mark in league play.

Davis shot 12-of-19 from the field, 4-of-7 from behind the arc and dished out five assists against Green Bay.

The star rookie's historical season continued in a big way Thursday, as Davis broke the university's record for points by a true freshman in a single season after a 3-pointer with 10:59 remaining in the first half. The record was previously held by former Titan great Ray McCallum, who scored 446 points during the 2009-2010 season.

McFolley shot 10-of-16 from the field and drilled in a game-high six triples for Detroit Mercy. He added five steals and is now seven shy of tying Titan Hall of Famer Rashad Phillips (1998-01) for third place in career steals.

The Titans never trailed against Green Bay. Their largest lead was 28 points with 8:39 left in the second half.

Sophomore Jordan Gorman hit a jump shot with 39 seconds left as Detroit Mercy crossed the 100-point mark on the night. It had been six years to the date since the Titans' last scored at least 100 points in a victory over a Division I opponent. On Jan. 10, 2013, the red, white and blue toppled Youngstown State 101-60.

Junior Harrison Curry and graduate student Derrien King also finished in double figures scoring for the Titans, each chipping in 11 points. Curry shot 4-of-5 from the field and grabbed 10 boards for his first double-double as a Titan.

Freshman Chris Brandon grabbed seven boards and senior Gerald Blackshear Jr. and King had  five caroms apiece.

Next up for the Titans is a matinee matchup with Milwaukee at Calihan Hall on Saturday, Jan. 12 at 1 p.m. Fans can watch the tilt on ESPN+ or listen to the broadcast on Radio 910 AM.

First Half

  • The Titans opened the game on a 10-0 run, after Blackshear, Jr. floated home a layup, McFolley hit a triple and King scored five points on a jumper and 3-pointer
  • Green Bay pulled within eight points, 19-11, with 12:05 left, but Detroit Mercy went on a shooting tear, as the red-hot McFolley scored five points and Davis drilled home a triple, giving the Titans a 16-point edge, 27-11
  • Davis' triple with 10:59 left gave him 10 points on the night but had far more of a historical importance, as it broke Detroit Mercy's true freshman record for points in a season, which was previously held by Ray McCallum with 446 points
  • McFolley sunk a layup and hit back-to-back triples over 1:20 midway through the first half, as the Titans went up 35-17 over Green Bay
  • But the Phoenix responded in a big way, using a 19-6 run over 4:18 to cut the Titans lead to seven, 43-36, but the red, white and blue closed out the first half on a 12-4 run to take a 53-40 advantage into the break

Second Half

  • Detroit Mercy came out firing after halftime, scoring 14 unanswered points in the first four minutes of the second half
  • Davis scored the first seven points of the 14-0 run with McFolley chipping in the last seven, as both players pushed their point totals to 25 on the night
  • Green Bay countered with a 7-1 run, but a McFolley free throw and layup, free throw make by freshman Harrison Curry and triple by King pushed the Titans' lead to 26 points with 13:57 left
  • Both teams traded baskets, but four straight triples by the red, white and blue kept the Phoenix out of reach
  • Gorman's jump shot with 39 seconds left gave him his first Division I points and pushed the Titans past the 100-point mark
