DETROIT (1/30/2019) -- Freshman Antoine Davis led a trio of Titans in double figures with 29 points, senior Gerald Blackshear Jr. grabbed a career-high 14 rebounds and the University of Detroit Mercy sunk Cleveland State, 78-64, Thursday at Calihan Hall to kick off the second half of Horizon League play.
Davis was a wrecking ball at the free-throw line for Detroit Mercy (9-13, 6-4 Horizon League), converting 15-of-17 attempts. His 29-points led all scorers, and it's the 15th time he's scored at least 20 points in a game this season for the Titans.
Detroit Mercy trailed Cleveland State, 20-15, at the 11-minute mark in the first half. But the Titans responded in an explosive way, going on a 32-8 run over the next 16 minutes to take a 47-28 advantage. The Vikings (6-17, 1-9 HL) never led again.
Graduate student Derrien King scored 13 points, grabbed a career-high nine rebounds and dished three assists for Detroit Mercy, and freshman Willy Isiani racked up 11 points, six boards and four assists.
In addition to his 14 rebounds, Blackshear Jr. added six points — including a pair of electrifying dunks — and tied his career mark with three blocks.
Freshman Marquis Moore earned his second-consecutive start and made his presence known for the red, white and blue, totaling seven points, four rebounds and a game-high three steals.
Detroit Mercy won all three phases of the rebound battle, gaining a 42-37 advantage overall, 17-14 offensively and 25-23 defensively. The Titans also led in points off turnovers (13-12) and second-chance points (18-14).
The Titans return to action Saturday as they host Youngstown State (7-16, 3-7 HL) at 1 p.m.
