DETROIT (10/1/2019) -- The University of Detroit Mercy men's soccer team dropped a 1-0 non-conference match to visiting Bowling Green on Tuesday night from Titan Field. It was the fourth home contest of the 2019 season for the Titans (2-6-1).
The lone goal of the game was scored in the 65th minute with the Falcons scoring after a corner kick was played short. BGSU played the ball in the corner of the field and then eventually sent a pass into the middle of the box with midfielder Ike Swiger one-timing the ball past Titan keeper
Devin Mendez and into the back of the net.
The Titans had their chances late in the match, most notably when senior
Justin Schueneman sent a hard shot from outside of the box towards net, but the shot was turned away. Just seconds later, sophomore
Ryan Halloran pushed a header attempt wide of the net and in the waning seconds of the match, Halloran had another shot and in a rush he grabbed the ball and hurled in a throw-in that was just pushed wide by sophomore forward
Kyle Bandyk just as the buzzer sounded.
In the first half, Detroit Mercy had four looks in the first 10 minutes of the contest with junior
Justin Murray pushing a shot wide and Schueneman and sophomore
Ben Al-Gharabally also going wide with shots. Junior
Demetri Pliakos then had a shot blocked in the box after a Titan corner kick.
The red, white and blue out-shot Bowling Green in the match, 15-13, which included a 9-6 margin in the second half. Halloran and Bandyk each had three shots in the game, while Schueneman, Pliakos and senior
Aleks Vushaj added multiple shots with two each. Freshman
Matthew Andres, making his first collegiate appearance, added a shot on goal in the first half.
Mendez made two saves in net for the Titans, making his ninth consecutive start of the season. Corner kicks in the game were 5-4 in favor of Detroit Mercy and a total of 32 fouls were whistled in the contest, while one yellow card was issued.
It was the first meeting between the two programs in men's soccer since the 2014 season and 28th time the two squads were playing all-time.

Detroit Mercy is in the middle of a three-game stretch away from Horizon League play and returns to play Friday at Purdue Fort Wayne at 7 p.m. ET. The Titans then visit the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor next Wednesday, Oct. 9 for a 7:30 p.m. match before hosting Northern Kentucky in a doubleheader with the Titan women's team at home on Saturday, Oct. 12.
