DAYTON, Ohio (10/19/2019) -- The University of Detroit Mercy men's soccer team fought throughout Saturday's road Horizon League match at host Wright State, but Detroit Mercy couldn't push across the game-tying goal in the second half, falling to the Raiders by a 3-1 margin. The Titans fell to 1-3-1 in Horizon League play with the setback, but have three matches remaining on the league slate in 2019.
The Titans trailed early as Wright State scored the first two goals, but cut into that advantage on junior forward
Mohamad Miri's goal in the 45th minute just before the halftime break that made the score 2-1. Detroit Mercy had chances in the second half, but couldn't push across the tying goal and Wright State scored an empty-net goal with just seconds left.
Wright State did out-shoot the Titans in the match, 23-11, and Detroit Mercy made 10 saves total in the match with sophomore goalkeeper
Devin Mendez turning away a season-high nine shots for the red, white and blue.
Detroit Mercy's 45th minute goal developed nicely with senior defender
Justin Schueneman whipping the ball into the box off a throw-in and then sophomore defender
Ryan Halloran flicking the ball to Miri at the far post. Miri corralled the ball nicely and beat the keeper into the back of the net. Schueneman and Halloran both earned assists on the play, while it was Miri's second goal of the season.
Junior midfielder
Collin Cavanaugh led the Titans with three shots, one of them on goal. The Titans had four shots on goal -- including Miri's goal. Junior
Demetri Pliakos and sophomore
Kyle Bandyk also both each had two shots for the red, white and blue. Senior
Garret Weaver and Cavanaugh each had shots on goal back-to-back in the 66th minute of the match and Bandyk had a shot that was blocked in a 40-second span, but the Titans couldn't find the back of the net.
Halloran and Pliakos each had shots later in the half, but neither were on frame.
