CLEVELAND (11/8/2019) -- The University of Detroit Mercy men's soccer team saw Cleveland State control the action for much of the night, but stellar defense kept the Vikings off the scoreboard and then sophomore
Kyle Bandyk sent the Titans to a home playoff game as the red, white and blue blanked CSU, 1-0, on Friday night in the regular-season finale.
The win guaranteed Detroit Mercy the No. 3 seed in the Horizon League Championship as the Titans will host sixth-seeded Milwaukee on Monday night at home in a 7 p.m. start. Milwaukee won the first meeting, 1-0, in the Motor City back in September in the first-ever night home game in school history.
The Titans were outshot, 21-10, in the contest, but sophomore
Devin Mendez made five saves, and the Titan defense had a couple of key blocks to keep CSU off the scoreboard.
After the Vikings controlled much of the possession time in the first 60 minutes, the Titans started to advance the ball and that set up the magic in the 77th minute as junior
Daniel Iyok fed Bandyk, who split a trio of defenders and fired a shot to the right of the keeper.
CSU came out as the aggressor and had a few scoring opportunities early on. In the 25th minute, the Vikings got off three shots, one that was saved by Mendez, another a team save and the last off the post to keep the game at 0-0.
Mendez then made back-to-back stops at 33:36 and 34:29 to keep CSU at bay as it was scoreless at the half.
In the second, sophomore
Ryan Halloran had a header off a corner kick that was saved in the 61st minute and back came Cleveland State only to see Mendez post another save at the 63:01.
It was just a few minutes later when Iyok won a ball near the offensive zone and fed Bandyk for the game-winning marker.
Mendez made his fifth save at 77:06 and Detroit Mercy held off a few late CSU charges, but in the end, the Titans clinched a postseason berth and home game.
