Davis Reaches 1,000 Points As Titans Fall At Notre Dame

SOUTH BEND, Ind. (12/10/2019) -- Sophomore Antoine Davis made some Titan history by reaching 1,000 career points as the fastest player in school history with 27 on the night, but it was not enough as the University of Detroit Mercy men's basketball team was downed, 110-71 on Tuesday night at Purcell Pavilion.

Davis crossed the 20-point plateau for the 30th time in his career and by reaching 1,000 points in his 39th career game, he surpassed the great Dave DeBusschere - a NBA Hall-Of-Famer who was named one of the top 50 players in NBA history - as the fastest Titan to 1,000 as DeBusschere did it in 43 games. He also became the 43rd Titan to reach 1,000.

Davis finished with 27 points, four assists and a pair of steals. Graduate Brad Calipari has 12 points nailing four 3-pointers and senior Justin Miller and sophomore Willy Isiani had 11 apiece.

Detroit Mercy (1-8) had an early 5-3 lead as Miller got inside for a basket and sophomore Marquis Moore hit a three. Notre Dame (7-3) would surge ahead, but the Titans twice got within four as Calipari connected on a trifecta to make it 14-10 at 13:36 and Davis hit a jumper to make it 16-12 at 12:48.

From there, the Fighting Irish would push their lead to double digits.

Davis would reach 1,000 with under nine minutes to go as he drove to the rim and was fouled, sinking both free throws.

Miller also had a team-high six rebounds, while sophomore Alonde LeGrand had four rebounds and two assists.

The Titans will now return home for three-straight games, starting with a basketball doubleheader on Saturday, Dec. 14, as both the men and women face Toledo with the women's tip at Noon and the men's game at 3 p.m.

First Period:
  • Miller got inside for a quick layup on the first possession
  • Moore drained a three to make it 5-3 at 19:10
  • After a 7-0 Notre Dame run, sophomore Chris Brandon's basket made it 10-7 and later on, a triple by Calipari had the team down 14-10 at 13:36
  • A minute later and a jumper by Davis had the team down by just four again, 16-12, at 12:48 on the clock
  • Notre Dame went on a 15-3 run to open a double-digit lead
  • Davis hit a shot and a three by Isiani had the team within 10, 34-24, with 6:30 left

Second Period:
  • Davis connected on back-to-back jumpers early in the second half and the score was 54-37
  • A three by Calipari had the deficit back to 17 again at 65-48, with 15:22 left
  • Davis nailed a jumper at 11:54 and was then fouled just under the nine-minute mark, sinking both free throws for his record-breaking 1,000th point

Game Notes:
  • Notre Dame leads the all-time series, 42-12
  • The Titans non-conference opponents are now 50-26 (65.7%) on the season as their schedule is currently ranked the 34th hardest in the NCAA
  • Davis is now tied with Ralph Goldstein '56 for 41st in school history with 1,001 career points
  • DeBusschere accomplished the feat in his 43rd collegiate game and he did so in a big way with a then career-best 32 points in a 69-65 win over Toledo in 1961
  • Davis joins DeBusschere and Ray McCallum as the only second-year players to reach 1,000 as Davis and McCallum are sophomore and  DeBusschere was a junior, but freshman were not allowed to play varsity
  • Davis now has 158 career 3-pointers, tied for ninth in school history with Michael Jackson '95
  • Miller now has 955 career points
  • Isiani was in double figures for the sixth time in his career
  • Calipari has now hit at least two 3-pointers in six of the first nine games
