DETROIT (12/21/2019) -- Four University of Detroit Mercy women's basketball freshmen scored in double figures Saturday afternoon with three of those players hitting their career-highs but the Titans fell at home to Eastern Michigan, 84-70, from Calihan Hall. It was the final non-conference game of the 2019-20 season.
Detroit Mercy freshmen scored 64 of the Titans' 70 points in the game with
Markyia McCormick scoring a career-high 19 points,
Annika Corcoran scoring a career-high 16 points and
Bridgid Fox tying her career-high with 14 points.
Sylare Starks also scored in double figures for the seventh time this season with 12 points. McCormick had a big second half, scoring 15 points after the halftime break, including 12 in the third quarter alone. Corcoran knocked down three 3-pointers and Fox had 14 points for the second-straight game, adding eight rebounds.
Fox had it going early with six points in the first quarter hitting an early three-pointer to put the Titans up by two with a great pass from Starks, 4-2. A couple of minutes later, Fox would again score on a layup assisted from senior forward
Zoey Oatis. She had six points after the opening 10 minutes of play.
In the second quarter, the Titans again called Fox's number as she dashed to the basket and was able to draw the foul. After splitting a pair of foul shots, the Titans found themselves within 12 points. A Corcoran three-pointer at the 6:55 mark cut the EMU lead to nine for Detroit Mercy, 28-19, which capped a 5-0 scoring run for the Titans the last two minutes of the second stanza.
Corcoran (eight points) and Fox (seven points) combined for 15 points in the first half, but Eastern Michigan held a 45-26 halftime advantage over the Titans. McCormick took over in the third quarter, scoring 12-straight Detroit Mercy points at one stretch of the third quarter. She had a career-high 16 points at the end of the third quarter, but Detroit Mercy trailed 68-46.
Starks scored the first five Titan points in the fourth quarter, before Fox sank a lay-up to cut the deficit to 18, 71-53. The Titans out-scored Eastern Michigan in the fourth quarter, 24-16, on the strength of 12-of-15 shooting from the free throw line. Starks and Fox wach had seven points in the final 10 minutes of the contest.
The Titans were able to hit the glass and gain the rebounding edge over EMU, 38-35, with 14 of those coming on the offensive end alone. Detroit Mercy shot 24-of-32 from the free throw line (75-percent) and knocked down a season-high eight 3-pointers. The Titans shot 34.5-percent from the floor (19-of-55) overall.
Fox had a team-high eight rebounds, with four of them coming on the offensive end. McCormick also had three offensive caroms for the Titans. McCormick shot 6-of-14 from the floor, including 4-of-5 in the third quarter. Senior
Zoey Oatis had two steals and six rebounds for Detroit Mercy.
Titan News & Notes
• Corcoran and McCormick both scored career-highs for the Titans and it was the second and third double-figure scoring efforts for the pair of guards, respectively. For McCormick, it was the third time in the past four games scoring more than 10 points in a game.
• McCormick's 19 points also matched a Titan season-high with classmate Starks also scoring 19 points earlier this season.
• Starks scored in double figures for the seventh time this season and surpassed the 100-point plateau on the season (111 points).
• Fox had her second-straight double figure scoring effort and third overall this season, tying her career-high with 14 points. Her eight caroms were one off her career-high.
• Starks made two 3-pointers in a game for the seventh time this season.
• The 24 made free throws were the most in a game since the Titans made 25 last season at home against Wright State.
• In scoring 70 points, it was the first time Detroit Mercy had reached that mark since against the Raiders at home last season on Feb. 28, 2019.
• It was the 29th all-time meeting between the two women's basketball programs (Titans lead, 15-14).
• Detroit Mercy plays all four games at home in December, finishing the home stand with a contest against Oakland on Dec. 28.

Detroit Mercy opens the Horizon League slate next weekend, hosting Metro Series rival Oakland on Saturday, Dec. 28 from Calihan Hall. The game is set for a 12 p.m. start on Dick Vitale Court.
