INDIANAPOLIS (12/23/2019) -- University of Detroit Mercy freshman guard Markyia McCormick (Pickerington, Ohio / Canal Winchester) was named the Horizon League Freshman of the Week on Monday, it was announced by the league office. It's McCormick's first career honor from the Horizon League.

It was Detroit Mercy's league-high third Horizon League Freshman of the Week honor in the opening seven weeks of the 2019-20 season with three different freshmen garnering the accolade. It's also the second consecutive week that a Titan freshmen has received a Horizon League honor.

McCormick scored a career-high 19 points in Saturday's non-league finale against Eastern Michigan, also tying a season-high by a Titan player. McCormick scored in double figures for the third time in the past four games and scored 15 of her points after the halftime break, including 12-straight Titan points in the third quarter.

The guard from Pickerington, Ohio shot 6-of-14 from the field (43-percent) and sank 6-of-8 shots from the free throw line. She added four rebounds (three offensive), one assist and one steal in 28 minutes off the bench. Four Detroit Mercy freshmen scoring in double figures and Titan freshmen scored 64 of the 70 points in the 84-70 setback to the Eagles.

Over her past four games, McCormick has averaging 13.5 points per game, shooting 46.5 percent from the floor. Overall on the season, McCormick ranks second on the squad in scoring at 8.4 points per game and has sank 42.1 percent of her field goal attempts and 72-percent of her free throw shots. She has scored in all 11 games this season.

McCormick is the third Titan to earn the Horizon League Freshman of the Week award this season following classmates Sylare Starks (Nov. 25) and Bridgid Fox (Dec. 16). The Titans return to play Saturday, Dec. 28, hosting Metro Series rival Oakland to open Horizon League play. Start time is set for 12 p.m. from Calihan Hall.
