Titans Drop Mid-Week Contest At Kent State

KENT, OHIO  (12/3/2019) -- Sophomore Antoine Davis had a game-high 23 points and six assists, but Kent State went on a run early in the second half as the University of Detroit Mercy men's basketball team fell, 92-57, on Tuesday night,

It was the final game of a season-opening seven-game road trip that saw the Titans travel just under 10,000 miles round trip (9,980) as they will play at home on Saturday. 

Davis also had two rebounds and two assists and was a perfect 7-of-7 from the free-throw line.

Senior Justin Miller had six points and a team-high nine rebounds and sophomore Alonde LeGrand had four points, six rebounds and a season-high three steals. Graduate senior Brad Calipari hit a couple of 3-pointers for six points and junior Dwayne Rose Jr. had five.

The Titans (1-6) trailed 36-30 at the break and 36-32 early in the second half, but Kent State (7-1) went on a 25-5 run to take control of the contest.

The Titans were 15-of-18 at the free-throw line and held Kent State to 8-of-26 from behind the arc.

Detroit Mercy will be back in action on Saturday as the Titans play their home opener against in-state rival Eastern Michigan with a 1 p.m. tip on Dick Vitale Court in Calihan Hall.

It will be the Titans' DPS game and all tickets are set for just $2 (must be purchased at Calihan Hall) with all proceeds from ticket sales donated to Detroit Public Schools K-5 with Michigan First Credit Union contributing a matching donation for all tickets sold.

First Period:
  • A basket from Davis and a three from Calipari had the Titans in front, 5-2 early
  • Detroit Mercy would then take an 8-6 lead as Davis hit from the outside
  • Back-to-back 3-pointers from Davis and Moore tied the game at 21-all at the 8:05 mark
  • A layup by Davis and then the old fashioned three-point play by Rose Jr. had the Titans down by just one, 28-27, with 3:01 left
  • Davis broke down the defense and fed sophomore Boe Nguidjol for a layup as time expired to make it 36-30 at the break

Second Period:
  • Miller grabbed an offensive rebound and put it back to make it 36-32
  • Calipari knocked down another trey to get the titans within 41-35 with 17:28 left
  • Kent State would then go on a 25-5 run over the next six minutes to build a double-digit lead
  • A layup from Miller and Davis had the team down by 21, 62-41, with 11:37 left
  • Davis and LeGrand hit a pair of free throws and then an offensive rebound by LeGrand kept a possession alive and Davis got the ball back, finding sophomore Chris Brandon for a dunk to get within 19, 67-48, with 9:10 remaining
  • Almost a minute later, a steal and dunk by LeGrand made it an 18-point game, 70-52, with 8:10 on the clock
  • Kent State would go on a 13-2 run after that to seal the game away

Game Notes:
  • Despite the two campuses being separated by just 200 miles, this was just the sixth career meeting between the two squads as Kent State now leads it, 4-2
  • The seven-games away from home is the longest stretch since the Titans played 10 in a row away from the Motor City at the end of the 2000-01 season, which included two regular-season games, the Horizon League Tournament and the run to the NIT Final Four
  • Detroit Mercy came into the game leading the HL and 27th in the country in free-throw percentage at 77.7 percent and are now 75 for its last 92 (80.4%) at the charity stripe
  • Davis now has 29 career 20-point game in just 37 career collegiate contests
  • Davis now has 958 career points
  • Davis now has four games on the year with at least five assists
  • Miller's season-high in rebounds was 13 at Clemson
  • LeGrand now has back-to-back six rebound games
  • Calipari now has 16, 3-pointers on the year
