GREEN BAY, Wisc. (2/16/2019) -- Freshman
Antoine Davis inched closer to the NCAA record for most 3-pointers by a freshman as he led three Titans in double figures, but a second-half run by Green Bay was too much as the University of Detroit Mercy men's basketball team fell, 82-73, at the Resch Center on Saturday afternoon.
Davis had 22 points, hitting five 3-pointers in the process, tying him with Oklahoma's Trae Young last year for the second most in NCAA history by a freshman at 118 and trailing only Stephen Curry's 122 that he registered at Davidson in 2006-07.
Senior
Josh McFolley scored 19 points and became the school's all-time steals leader as his first half takeaway gave him 196 in his career, passing Jerry Davis (1978-82) for the sole top spot.
Graduate senior
Derrien King ended with 14 points and junior
Harrison Curry recorded seven points, a team-high seven rebounds and tied his season best with three steals.
The Titans (10-17, 7-8 HL) got off to a 12-0 run and had a double-digit lead a couple of times in the first half before heading into the break up 37-33. They then took an 11-point lead, 44-33, early in the second half, but Green Bay (14-13, 8-6 HL) started to mount a comeback and jumped ahead with 13:31 to go.
Neither team led by more than four points and there were numerous ties and lead changes for the next 10 minutes, but the Phoenix went on a 10-3 spurt and claimed the advantage for good at 67-64 with 2:03 left.
Davis also had a team-high four assists. Graduate senior
Jacob Holland had five points and freshman
Chris Brandon pulled down five boards.
The Titans shot 38.9 percent with 11 from behind the arc and held the Phoenix to just 8-of-25 from three.
Detroit Mercy will now get ready for #MetroSeries rival Oakland as the red, white and blue will be in Grizzlies territory next Saturday, Feb. 23, in a 3 p.m. tip.
