Titans Fall in Road Contest at Marquette

The Basics
Final Score:
Marquette 22, Detroit Mercy 9
Records: Detroit Mercy 0-2, Marquette 2-2
Location: Milwaukee, Wis. (Valley Fields)

MILWAUKEE, Wis. (2/17/2019) -- Kaitlyn Wandelt scored four goals and was one draw control shy of the single-game school record Sunday, but the University of Detroit Mercy women's lacrosse team fell in its second game of the season, 22-9, on the road at Marquette.

Wandelt had team-highs in the contest with four goals, five ground balls and nine draw controls, which was just one DC off the school record that she shares with two other players. Senior goalkeeper Allison McDonough made nine saves in the contest and became the second player in program history to reach 500 career saves.

Senior attacker Lexie Kinmond had her second-straight three-point effort with two goals and one assist for Detroit Mercy (0-2). She scored on both of her shots on goal. Sophomore attacker Kristina Ellis added one goal and one assist for the Titans, while senior Emma Leszczak and freshman Elise Harder also each scored for the Titans.

Both Detroit Mercy and MU's defense were strong early on as the first 15 minutes of the contest yielded just three goals. McDonough made four saves early in the game before MU found the back of the net six minutes into the contest. Wandelt then scored her first goal of the season off a free-position opportunity with 21:11 left before halftime. The Golden Eagles scored the next two goals before Wandelt again scored to make it 3-2 with 10 minutes left in the opening half.

Marquette again scored two-straight before Kinmond scored after causing a turnover and then beating the goalkeeper on the ensuing rush to the net. Kinmond added a free-position goal just before the halftime break as Detroit Mercy trailed after the opening 30 minutes, 7-4.

MU opened the second half with three-straight goals before Wandelt completed her hat trick at the 27:24 mark of the second half. Her goal cut the Marquette lead to 10-5. The Golden Eagles countered with three more markers before Leszczak scored off a great feed from sophomore Meredith Moore after sophomore Sarah Lucas cleared the ball from the other side of the field. Marquette again used another run, however, to take command of the contest late in the second half.

Wandelt scored her fourth goal with 10 minutes remaining before Ellis scored her first goal of the season late in the contest with both goals coming off free-position chances.

Marquette had the shot advantage in the game, 40-30, which included a 31-18 lead in shots on goal. Both teams made nine saves, while ground balls were nearly even as well with Marquette holding a 20-19 edge. MU had 19 draw controls, while Detroit Mercy finished with 13. The Titans were also 13-of-17 on clears.

Moore added three ground balls for the Titans, while senior defender Ali Magyaros and Kinmond each had two ground balls and one caused turnover. In addition to Wandelt's nine draw controls, Harder had two draw controls for Detroit Mercy. The Titans had seven caused turnovers as a team.
