ROCHESTER, Mich. (2/23/19) -- Three Titans scored in double-figures, headlined by freshman Antoine Davis' 20 points, but it wasn't enough as the University of Detroit Mercy fell to Oakland, 95-75, Saturday afternoon in a #MetroSeries battle.
Senior Josh McFolley tallied 14 points on a pair of 3-pointers and Harrison Curry netted 13 points over 17 minutes played.
The Titans battled Oakland throughout the first half but couldn't keep pace with the Golden Grizzlies' 3-point barrage. Oakland had four more treys than Detroit Mercy, winning the battle 12-8.
Davis netted three 3-pointers on the afternoon, giving him 121 on the season. He is one shy of tying Stephen Curry for the most by a freshman in a single season in NCAA history.
Senior Gerald Blackshear Jr. was a field goal shy of a double-double, totaling eight points on 4-of-5 shooting and 10 rebounds. Freshman Marquis Moore had seven points and seven rebounds.
Detroit Mercy won the battle in second-chance points (21-7), fast-break points (7-3) and bench points (25-15).
The Titans trailed 45-36 at halftime. Graduate student Derrien King led the red, white and blue with eight first-half points on 3-of-4 shooting.
Detroit Mercy closes out the regular season next week at Calihan Hall. The Titans battle IUPUI on Thursday, Feb. 28 at 8 p.m. and will be celebrating Faculty/Staff Appreciation Night. The game is part of a double-header with women's basketball.
First Half:
- It was a 4-4 game early on, but Oakland went on a 10-3 run to jump in front, 14-7
- Oakland led 23-9 when Blackshear Jr., collected an offensive rebound and putback at the 10:12 mark and then King nailed a three to get the Titans within nine, 23-14
- Davis' first three made it a 27-19 contest
- McFolley was fouled on a three and he connected on all three to make it a 31-22 game with 5:57 on the clock
- Two more free throws by McFolley got the red, white and blue within eight, 37-29, with just over three minutes remaining
- King drilled a triple to get the Titans even closer, 39-32, with just under two minutes left
- Curry was able to get inside for a layup as time expired and the Titans went into the half down 45-36
Second Half:
- Davis hit his second triple of the game one minute into the half to make it a seven-point game, 47-40
- A layup by Moore and dunk by Curry broke up a 6-0 run by Oakland over the next three minutes
- McFolley hit a triple in front of the Titans bench with 14:11 left and Curry floated in a layup, cutting the red, white and blue's deficit to 11 points, 60-49
- Curry slammed home another dunk at the 11-minute mark, and McFolley added another 3-pointer a minute and a half later
- After Davis was fouled on a 3-point attempt with 7:46 left, the Titans pieced together a 9-0 run spanning two minutes, featuring four points from Blackshear Jr. and a fadeaway jumper from Davis, cutting Oakland's lead to 15 points, 80-65
- Davis nailed his third triple of the afternoon with 4:26 left, putting him one 3-pointer shy of tying the freshman record held by Stephen Curry
- The Titans closed the game with a 4-2 run after Blackshear put in a jumper and Davis made back-to-back free throws
Game Notes
- This was the 25th career meeting between the two schools, located roughly 26 miles apart and Detroit Mercy still leads the overall series, 13-11
- With Long starting, the Titans have now used 13 different starts, the most in the nation, as well as 14 different starting line-ups
- Detroit Mercy had just six turnovers, its second-lowest mark of the season behind the five at Cleveland State and the Titans now have nine games with less than 10 turnovers on the year
- Davis now has 121, 3-pointers on the season, passing Trae Young for second and just two shy of breaking Stephen Curry's freshman record of 122 in 2006-07
- Davis now has 20, 20-point games, the most by a Titan since Willie Green tallied 22 in 2002-03
- Davis' season high in assists is seven, accomplished twice this season at Eastern Michigan and against Milwaukee
- Davis moved past Dave DeBusschere and into sixth place with 709 points on the year, 15 shy of Bill Ebben's total of 724

- McFolley is now tied for third in school history with Dwayne Kelley at 224 career, 3-pointers
