MILWAUKEE (2/23/19) – The University of Detroit Mercy men's lacrosse team jumped all over Marquette in a big 15-12 road victory on Saturday afternoon from Valley Fields in the Badger State.
Detroit Mercy (2-1) had three players tally hat tricks for the first time in school history and also saw a record break as junior
Alex Jarzembowski won 19-of-30 in the face-off circle to break his own school mark.
The Titans came out firing with the game's first four goals. The Titans carried the tone into halftime with just three goals allowed, and pushed the lead to as much as nine with a 13-4 lead late in the third quarter.
Marquette (2-1) - who is receiving votes in the latest polls – charged a late rally, but the Titan lead was too far out of reach as the hosts fell to Detroit Mercy, 15-12.

Brett Erskine led the squad with a career-high four goals and tied his career best with five points, while freshman
Cam Kostus and senior
Matthew Vangalen added three apiece. It was a season high for Kostus and the second-straight hat trick for Vangalen, who had four goals at Notre Dame.

Logan Shamblin had a strong game in front of the Titan net and earned the win while making 11 saves.

Paul Manuszak led Detroit Mercy by tying his season and career best with six ground balls and Jarzembowski added five.
The win is the Titans first ever over both Marquette and a Big East opponent.
Detroit Mercy improves to 2-1 with the victory, while Marquette falls to 2-1. The Titans return to action next Saturday (Mar. 2) at 1 p.m. vs. Bellarmine in Louisville, Ky.
First Quarter:
- The Titans made a pair of strong defensive stands before catching fire offensively for the game's first four goals
- Cam Kostus opened the scoring with the first goal of the game at 10:32
- Detroit Mercy scored less than a minute later as Jarzembowski won the faceoff and Seth Mendell scored at 9:34
- The lead increased to 3-0 when AJ Van Voorhis found Matthew Vangalen for a goal at 7:10
- Matt Blevins capped the 4-0 run with a goal at 4:43 off a feed from Mendell
- Marquette scored after winning the faceoff and trailed 4-1 at 4:09
- Shamblin made a pair of big saves midway through the quarter and the Titans thwarted four shots in the closing minute to take a 4-1 lead into the second quarter
Second Quarter:
- Detroit Mercy killed a penalty to open the quarter and pushed the lead to 5-1 as Kostus scored his second goal of the game off a turnover at 14:00
- A save from Shamblin sparked a fast break that resulted in another Titan goal at 9:34 to lead 6-1
- Marquette ripped a number of shots against a strong Titan defense before finally finding the net at 3:31
- The Golden Eagles tacked on another goal a minute later to trim the Titan lead to 6-3
- Vangalen found Erskine for a Titan goal with a minute remaining to send Detroit Mercy into the half with a 7-3 advantage
Third Quarter:
- The Titan offense exploded with four goals in the first five minutes of the second half to lead 11-3 with 10:07 on the clock
- Kostus capitalized on a man-up opportunity less than a minute into the frame for the hat trick at 14:14
- Erskine added a second Titan hat trick with a goal at 12:39, his third of the game to increase the lead to 9-3
- Vangalen scored back-to-back goals at 11:26 and 10:07 for a hat trick of his own, increasing the Detroit Mercy lead to 11-3
- Marquette ended the run with a goal at 9:12, but Detroit Mercy increased the lead back to 12-4 as Mendell scored on a feed from Erskine at 7:27
- Jarzembowski won the face off and took it the distance for a goal moments later, giving the Titans their largest lead at 13-4 with 7:16 to go
- Marquette finished the quarter with seven shots, converting on three of them, to cut the Titan lead to 13-7 heading into the fourth
Fourth Quarter:
- The Golden Eagles scored the first two goals of the frame, the second coming with 8:47 to go to snip the lead to 13-9
- Erskine scored his fourth goal of the game to end the 5-0 Marquette run and make the score 14-9 in favor of Detroit Mercy at 7:45
- Marquette responded quickly at 7:20 with a goal to make it 14-10
- AJ Van Voorhis scored his first collegiate goal at 4:57 to give Detroit Mercy a 15-10 lead
- Marquette scored the final two goals of the game, but Shamblin was strong in front of net and helped preserve the 15-12 win for the Titans

- Erskine tied his season high with five points he had against Siena last year, while the the four goals trumped the three he scored against Marist as a rookie
- Vangalen now has 11 career hat tricks
- Jarzembowski's previous career high was 16 faceoff wins, tied for the school mark with 16 that Brandon Davenport posted twice
