DETROIT (3/13/2019) -- The University of Detroit Mercy women's lacrosse team rallied in the second half in its non-conference tilt Wednesday with American University, with sophomore
Kamryn Corraro scoring the game-tying goal with 3:41 left in regulation, but the Titans fell to the visiting Eagles in overtime, 9-8, from Titan Field. American scored with just 38 seconds left in the first overtime period.
The Titans (1-5) held American University scoreless for the final 20 minutes of regulation after the Eagles gained an 8-6 lead 10 minutes into the second half. The Titan defense notched several caused turnovers in that stretch and Titan senior goalkeeper
Allison McDonough tallied six saves, five ground balls and one caused turnover during the final 20 minutes of regulation. Detroit Mercy rallied from three goals down overall, trailing 7-4 early in the second frame.
Detroit Mercy pulled within one goal, 8-7, with 14:21 remaining in the second half when Corraro took a feed from senior midfielder
Morgan Girardi and found the back of the net. McDonough then made a series of saves with the clock winding down and with 3:41 left, Corraro again scored to knot the score, 8-8, with just minutes remaining.
Both teams had shots in the final minutes of regulation, with American getting a good chance on a free-position opportunity with under 10 seconds left. The Titan defense again was up to the task and McDonough scooped up another ground ball as AU's shot was deflected and softly went into the waiting stick of McDonough as time ran out in regulation.
The red, white and blue won the opening draw control in overtime, but both teams committed a series or turnovers. American's second turnover in overtime came as McDonough stepped in front of a pass which was heading towards the front of the net. After three minutes, neither team was able to get a look on net. The teams again traded turnovers in the second portion of overtime after the teams switched ends. Senior defender
Alex McCafferty caused one of the turnovers, but Detroit Mercy turned it over shortly thereafter.
American scored 5:22 into overtime with Kendall Goldblum getting by the defense and finishing on a shot from the center of the eight-meter. Her second goal of the game proved to be the game-winner.
Three Titans scored multiple goals on the cold and overcast afternoon from Titan Field with Corraro, freshman
Elise Harder and Girardi all each scoring twice. Girardi added one assist to lead Detroit Mercy with three points. Senior attacker

Kaitlyn Wandelt had four draw controls, while Kinmond added three DC. Wandelt also had five ground balls and a team-best four caused turnovers. McCafferty and sophomore defender
Sarah Lucas both had two caused turnovers.
McDonough had a big day in net with 13 saves, a Titan season-high eight ground balls and three caused turnovers.
AU held a 3-1 lead early, but Detroit Mercy scored the next three goals to take a 4-3 lead with Girardi, Harder and Ellis all scoring for the red, white and blue. AU closed out the first half on a 3-0 run to take a 6-4 edge at the halftime break. Detroit Mercy scored four of the final five goals in regulation in the comeback effort, before AU capitalized near the end of the first overtime frame.
The Eagles had the shot advantage in the contest, 31-22, but Detroit Mercy held the saves count (13-4). Detroit Mercy held a 24-23 edge in ground balls and caused turnovers (14-10). The Titans had 21 turnovers, while the Eagles finished with 19. Both teams went 17-of-22 on clear attempts. American had a 12-8 advantage in draw controls during the contest.

• McDonough made 10 or more saves for the 29th time in her career; She has 27 stops in her past two games.
• McDonough's eight ground balls were tied for fourth all-time in single-game school history; She holds the school record of 10 at Stetson in 2017.
• The senior GK also has 174 career ground balls, which is just 24 GB off the school record of 198, held by Zaynib Hamze.
• Corraro scored two goals for the third time in six games this season, including the final two Titan goals Wednesday and the game-tying marker with 3:41 left.
• Harder has at least one goal in all six games this season and upped her season total to 10.
• Girardi had her second three-point game of the season with a team-high three points.
• Wandelt has at least four ground balls in five of six contests in 2019 and tallied a season-best four caused turnovers on Wednesday.
• Wandelt had a team-high four draw controls and is just one DC shy of 200 in her Titan career; She'd be the first Detroit Mercy player ever to reach that mark.
• The Titans held American to nine goals in the game, which was a season-low mark allowed by the red, white and blue.
• The red, white and blue had 14 caused turnovers, the second most in a game this season (Detroit Mercy had 17 CT at Ohio State).
• Detroit Mercy has two-straight at home before heading back out onto the road for five consecutive contests away from Titan Field.
• It was the second career meeting between the two schools after Detroit Mercy picked up a 16-8 road victory last season.
