Titans Wrap Up Regular Season, Fall To UIC On Senior Day

DETROIT (3/2/2019) -- Freshman Antoine Davis scored a game-high 25 points, senior Josh McFolley and junior Lamar Hamrick each added 12 points and the University of Detroit Mercy men's basketball team fell to UIC, 80-71, Saturday in the regular-season finale at Calihan Hall.

Prior to the game, the Titans celebrated Senior Day as the team honored their seniors and members of the upcoming graduating class — graduate students Derrien King and Jacob Holland, seniors Gerald Blackshear Jr., Josh McFolley and Musial Gjysma and junior Cole Long, who will be graduating early.

Detroit Mercy found itself fending off a hot start by the Flames, but a 10-0 run midway through the first half saw the Titans take their first lead of the contest. From thereon, both UIC and Detroit Mercy traded blows and leads, with the Flames ultimately grabbing an advantage they would not surrender a quarter of the way through the second half.

With 3:40 left in the game, McFolley hit the Titans' 280th 3-pointer of the season, breaking the record for most triples by the team in a single season. The previous record was 279 triples, a feat accomplished by the 2000-2001 Titans squad.

Five Titans grabbed at least four rebounds in the contest, led by Blackshear Jr.'s seven caroms. Davis added five boards and tied Blackshear Jr. for a team-high two steals.

McFolley dished a team-high four assists in his final game at Calihan Hall.

Detroit Mercy won the battle in fast break points (24-14), points off turnovers (18-8) and had four fewer turnovers than UIC (17-13).

With the regular season wrapped up, the Titans will now turn their attention to the postseason and #MotorCityMadness as Detroit Mercy will be the seventh seed and will play second-seeded NKU in the first round. That game is slated for Wednesday, March 6, at 7 p.m.

First Half:

  • Holland put the Titans on the board one minute into the contest and Davis scored his first two points on a jumper shortly after
  • UIC pieced together a 10-2 run, capped by a triple with 13:20 left, as the Flames went up by seven points, 17-10, for what would be the largest lead for either team in the first half
  • Detroit Mercy responded with a 10-0 run, fueled by a Davis triple and seven makes from the charity stripe, to take its first lead of the contest at midway through the first half
  • Both teams traded blows and the lead from thereon, as neither UIC or Detroit Mercy held more than a four-point lead during the final 10 minutes of the first half
  • The Titans made 17 free throws in the first half and took a 42-39 advantage into the break as McFolley hit a pair with 25 seconds remaining

Second Half:

  • UIC struck first out of the break but Davis and McFolley each hit a triple to put the Titans up 48-43 just 2:30 into the second half, their largest lead up to that point
  • But the Flames hit a pair of triples, with a pair of layups and a dunk wedged between, for a 12-4 run to go up 55-52 with 14:13 left
  • King ended the run with a jumper, and freshman Willy Isiani netted his first points of the game less than a minute later
  • The Flames wouldn't stay extinguished for long, as they pieced together another lengthy run, this time an 11-0 streak, to take a 70-58 advantage with 5:38 left
  • McFolley answered with a jumper and added a historic triple shortly after, giving the Titans 280 3-pointers on the season, the most in program history
  • Davis hit a fadeaway jumper to cut the Titans' deficit to seven points, 72-65, with 2:43 left
  • Moore converted a layup with eight seconds left and UIC closed out a nine-point victory

Game Notes:

  • UIC has won six in a row and seven of the last nine games, but Detroit Mercy leads the overall series, 31-21
  • Davis registered his 22nd, 20-point game of the season, the most by a Titan since Willie Green tallied 22 of his own in 2002-03
  • With his 10, 3-point attempts on the season, Davis set a school mark with 334, 3-point attempts, overtaking the 338 by Rashad Phillips in 2000-01
  • Hamrick was in double figures for the seventh time this year and in back-to-back games for the first time all year
  • Davis (754 points) also continued his climb up the Titans' single-season points leaderboard, passing Rashad Phillips and Archie Tullos for third place in points in a season at Detroit Mercy, just 17 points shy of Spencer Haywood's second-place total of 771 in 1968-69
  • McFolley now has 1,432 points, good for 17th place in school history and just two behind Terrell Riggs for 16th
  • McFolley now has 286 career assists
  • Blackshear Jr. came into the game with a career 61.5 percent shooting from the field
