DETROIT (3/23/2019) -- Sophomore
Logan Shamblin made 15 saves to lead a dominating defensive effort as the University of Detroit Mercy men's lacrosse team defeated Monmouth, 6-4, on Saturday at Titan Field.
The game was just the second in the state of Michigan and the first on campus for the Titans, who came off a six-game road trip to move to 5-3 overall and 2-1 in the MAAC.
Along with his 15 saves, Shamblin also had a season-high seven ground balls and a career-best three caused turnovers. Sophomore
Paul Manuszak posted three caused turnovers and senior
Mike Sforza and redshirt sophomore
Sam McClain each had two apiece, with McClain scooping up four ground balls.
Freshman
Max Payton scored two goals with an assist and freshman
Cam Kostus had two goals. Senior
Matthew Vangalen registered two goals and a helper and freshman
AJ Van Voorhis recorded a goal and an assist.
Detroit Mercy trailed 1-0 early as Monmouth (1-6, 0-2 MAAC) scored midway through the period, but the Titans tied it up with just a second left on the clock in the first as on a goal by Payton.
The Titans then took a 3-1 lead at the break and 4-1 early in the third. Detroit Mercy was up 5-2 with less than four minutes before the Hawks scored two in a row to cut it to 5-4 with 3:42 remaining.
The red, white and blue would answer with a goal from Kostus with 2:43 on the clock and the defense held tough at the end for the win.
Junior
Alex Jarzembowski was 10-of-15 in faceoffs with five ground balls to control the possession game.
The Titans were 17-of-21 on clears and had 13 caused turnovers, while Monmouth was 19-of-25 on clears and had 24 total turnovers.
Detroit Mercy will be back in action next week as the Titans head to upstate New York to face Marist on Saturday, March 30.
First Quarter:
- Shamblin made three saves early on as the Titans killed off a penalty
- Monmouth got on the board at the 8:50 mark
- The Titans had a few shots that were turned away by the Hawks' goalie
- Detroit Mercy then had to fight off another man-down situation as Shamblin came up with a caused turnover
- With the clock winding down, Vangalen found Payton and he beat the keeper to knot it at 1-1 with one second remaining
Second Quarter:
- Shamblin was on his game with three more saves and the Titan defense once again had to stave off a man-up situation for Monmouth, this time with a two-minute penalty
- Detroit Mercy took a 2-1 lead at the 11:22 mark as Voorhis fed Vangalen and he fired one to the back of the net
- Two more saves by the Titan goalie and another kill off a Hawks' power play ensued
- This time Detroit Mercy had the extra-man advantage and Vangalen hooked up with Payton and his second goal gave the Titans a 3-1 lead with 5:25 to go
Third Quarter:
- Jarzembowski won the opening faceoff and on the first possession, Voorhis tallied a goal for a 4-1 advantage
- McClain stopped a Monmouth possession with a caused turnover at 13:51 as did Manuszak at 10:18 and Shamblin at 6:33
- Shamblin had a couple of more saves, but Monmouth cut it to 4-2 with a minute left
- The Titans won the next faceoff and then Kostus unleashed a shot inbetween the pipes with 19 seconds on the clock for a 5-2 lead
Fourth Quarter:
- Shamblin made four saves in the first six minutes
- Manuszak ended a Hawks' possession with a caused turnover at 5:43
- Monmouth made it a 5-4 game with back-to-back scores at 3:58 and 3:42
- Jarzembowski came up with a big win at faceoff and with 2:43 on the clock, Payton set up Kostus and the freshmen connection delivered a goal for a 6-4 advantage
- McClain came up with a big caused turnover with just over a minute remaining
Game Notes:
- Detroit Mercy is now 6-2 all-time against Monmouth and has won three in a row
- Detroit Mercy is now 31-28 in regular season league play since joining the MAAC in 2010
- It will be a battle between two Rutgers' graduates and former teammates turned head coaches in Detroit Mercy's Chris Kolon and Monmouth's Brian Fisher as both attended Rutgers between 1995-2001 and were teammates for two seasons
- Detroit Mercy was without starting attackman Brett Erskine and Seth Mendell as both missed the contest with undisclosed ailments
- The four goals was the fewest the Titans have allowed since beating Bellarmine, 11-5, last year and the fewest in conference play since winning at Manhattan, 9-3, in 2016
- Payton now has five goals in the last two games
- Vangalen now has 60 career assists, just four behind Alex Maini for the most in school history
- Jarzembowski's five ground balls give him 130 in his career, now seventh in school history passing Pat Masterson (125) and Shayne Adams (127)
- After winning 10 faceoffs, Jarzembowski has now won double-digit faceoffs in 21 career games and 18-straight dating back to last season
- Shamblin made a career-high 16 saves at Quinnipiac last week and now has 256 career stops
- Shamblin has now allowed 10 goals or less in 16 of his 23 career games and has posted double-digit saves in 17 career contests
