Late Rally Catches Up To Titans

DETROIT (4/13/2016) -- Three Titans tallied a pair of goals, but a late rally by Canisius pushed the Golden Griffins past the University of Detroit Mercy men's lacrosse team, 11-8, on Saturday at Titan Field.

The game was the final home contest of the season for the Titans as their honored their nine-member senior class prior to the start in Mark Anstead, Connor Bennardo, Nick Boynton, Emmett Green, Sam Horton, Brent Lubin, Mike Sforza, Michael Turnbull and Matthew Vangalen

Vangalen led the offense with two goals and four assists as he set the single-season school mark with 27 helpers on the year. Junior Seth Mendell and freshman Cam Kostus also had two goals, while sophomores Brett Erskine and Ryan Figueiras also found the back of the net.

Junior Alex Akins recorded a career-high four caused turnovers to go with five ground balls and sophomore Paul Manuszak picked up six GB's. 

The game was tied 3-3 at the end of one and 6-6 at the half before Detroit Mercy (7-4, 4-2 MAAC) took an 8-6 advantage late in the third. Canisius (8-5, 4-1 MAAC) then ended the game on a 5-0 run to get the win.

Canisius outshot Detroit Mercy, 34-31, but the Titans held the top team in the MAAC on the man-up to 0-of-5 with the extra-man attack. The red, white and blue also had more ground balls, 29-27, but had 21 turnovers. 

Sophomore Logan Shamblin made six saves in net, Lubin had two caused turnovers and junior Alex Jarzembowski won 11 faceoffs. 

The Titans will be back in action next Saturday, Apr. 20, when they travel to Siena in another pivotal MAAC showdown. 

First Quarter: 
  • Canisius took a 1-0 lead by winning the opening faceoff and just 20 seconds later scored
  • Shamblin made a save, but the Golden Griffins went up 2-0 with 11:08 left
  • Akins would come up with two of his caused turnovers in the first and the second helped get the Titans on the board as Erskine took a pass from Vangalen and he beat the keeper at the 7:36 mark
  • This time the Titans won the ensuing faceoff and that led to another goal as junior Matt Turner fed Vangalen and he scored with 6:49 left
  • Canisius answered a little more than a minute later, but a save by Shamblin led to another scoring opportunity and Erskine set up Mendell for a marker with just 45 seconds on the clock

Second Quarter: 
  • The Titans killed off a penalty and Shamblin made two saves, but Canisius went up 5-4 at the 10:15 mark
  • Detroit Mercy tied it up a minute later as Vangalen found Figueiras and he found the back of the net
  • The Titans went up 5-4 as Bennardo led Vangalen to an open look and he fired one in at the 4:41 mark and then upped that to 6-4 just 40 seconds later using the man-up as Kostus took a pass from Vangalen and unleashed a shot to the twine
  • Canisius answered with two-straight goals to end the period to make it 6-6 at the break

Third Quarter:
  • The tandem of Vangalen and Kostus worked together again as Kostus scored his second to get the lead back at 12:10
  • Detroit Mercy killed off another penalty in the period and later on, redshirt sophomore Sam McClain came up with a caused turnover and that led to a score as Manuszak set up Mendell for a goal and an 8-6 lead at 5:08
  • The Titans were able to keep Canisius off the board on another man-up situation, but the Golden Griffins scored to make it 8-7 with 1:21 remaining

Fourth Quarter:
  • Both teams killed off penalties and each defense came up with caused turnovers, but Canisius tied the game at 8-8 with 9:10 left and scored a minute later to jump out in front, 9-8
  • The Titans would get off several more shots the rest of the way, but could not  get the tying goal

Game Notes:
  • The overall series is now tied at 6-6
  • This was a rematch of the 2018 MAAC Championship, won by Canisius, 10-9, in overtime
  • Detroit Mercy and Canisius are just two the eight Jesuit schools playing Division I lacrosse along with Fairfield, Georgetown, Holy Cross, Loyola (Md.), Marquette and St. Joseph's
  • Detroit Mercy came into the game second in the MAAC and 17th in the nation in man-up offense at 40.5 percent, while Canisius led the MAAC and was 13th in the nation in man-up scoring at 52.4 percent
  • Detroit Mercy and Canisius share a family bond in the Boissonneault family as Canisius attackman Mathieu Boissonneault is the younger brother of former Titan Emily Boissonneault was on the inaugural Titan women's lacrosse team in 2009m starred for the Titans from 2009-12 and is still the Titan career leader with 272 points and 242 goals
  • Vangalen now has 44 points on the year as he nears his own school record of 51 he set last season 
  • His 28 assists broke the school single-season mark of 24 by Alex Maini in 2014 and he now owns the single-season and career mark (69)
  • Vangalen now has 142 points in his career, just four away from Maini for second all-time in school history
  • Jarzembowski's 11 faceoff wins give him 159 on the season, four away from his school record of 163 last season
  • Mendell moved into a tie for seventh place in single-season goals with 27 on the year and into a tie for fourth in school history with 64 career markers
  • Akins now has 38 caused turnovers in his career to move to eighth in school history
