NORTHVILLE, Mich. (9/7/2019) -- The University of Detroit Mercy women's cross country team will be a young squad this season and true to form, a freshman led the team as the Titans hosted the 33rd Annual Running Fit-Detroit Mercy Invitational at Cass Benton Park in Northville on Saturday.
The event is the longest-running Titan tradition and featured men's and women's open 5k races, which included over 40 high schools, a boy's and girl's 1.5-mile middle school race and the Tommy Titan Kid's race as children nine and under raced against the lovable Titan mascot for 200-meters.
Freshman
Kaitlin Murray - who won the open race as a senior in high school last year and is the daughter of Director of track and field and cross country
Guy Murray '89 - topped the team by placing 15th with a time of 20:07 in the 5k race.
Junior
Rebecca Measel claimed 22nd in 20:59, while senior
Sarah DeDolph finished 26th in 21:26.
As a team of six - with four freshmen in the starting line-up - the Titans were fourth posting 97 points.
Detroit Mercy will next compete in another long cross country tradition in Notre Dame's National Catholic Championships, set for Sept. 20.

- The meet originated as a women's only race in 1987 with the men's race beginning in 1998
- Murray won the open 5k last season with a time of 19:35 as a senior at Divine Child
- Senior Kayla Hughes ran the race unattached and was sixth in 19:11
