Antoine Davis scored 17 points and sophomore
Chris Brandon just missed a double-double as the University of Detroit Mercy men's basketball team was edged, 83-80, at Green Bay on Saturday afternoon.
Davis also posted a team-high seven assists with seven rebounds, while Brandon had nine points and a game-best 15 boards.
In a game that featured nine lead changes and four ties, Detroit Mercy (4-16, 2-5 HL) had an eight-point cushion in the first, and a seven-point advantage early in the second, but Green Bay (9-11, 4-3 HL) kept trimming away and eventually got on top.
The Titans were able to force a turnover with 10 seconds left in the game and down by three, but a couple of game-winning shots did not fall.
The Titans started quickly and had a 9-3 lead just a few minutes in and were in front 22-14 with 12 minutes to go in the half before taking a 38-36 lead at the break.
In the second half, the red, white and blue had a seven-point lead, 44-37, with 17:37 left, when Green Bay went on a run to tie the game. The Titans were able to take a 49-47 lead right after that, but the Phoenix jumped out in front and the red, white and blue could not surge ahead.Â
Sophomore
Marquis Moore ended with 13 points, six assists and two steals and junior
Dwayne Rose Jr., netted 13 points. Freshman Sam Hogman chipped in a season-high nine points and senior
Justin Miller recorded seven points and four caroms.Â
The Titans shot 40.6 percent for the game and were 21-of-26 (80.8%) at the free-throw line, while also outrebounding the Phoenix, 42-39, and forcing 15 turnovers.
Detroit Mercy will now play seven of its next nine at home starting with IUPUI on Thursday, Jan. 23, in a 7 p.m., tip that will feature
Earl Cureton's jersey retirement at halftime.Â
First Half:
- The first half included three ties and eight lead changes
- Moore started the scoring early with a basket and two free throws
- A three by Hofman and another basket by Moore had the Titans up 9-3 at 16:49
- Davis would score five-straight Titan points, and after an offensive rebound and putback by Miller, Detroit Mercy was up 16-8 with 13:56 left
- After the Titans crashed the glass for three offensive rebounds, Rose Jr., knocked down one from distance for a 22-14 advantage with 12:03 on the clock
- Green Bay went on a 9-0 run to take the lead, but graduate senior Brad Calipari nailed a three to push the Titans back in front, 25-23, with eight minutes to go
- The Phoenix came back to take the lead at 30-26, but a 7-0 Titan surge saw Davis with a bucket, a 3-pointer by Calipari and an offensive rebound and putback by Miller for a 33-30 advantage with 4:19 remaining
- The lead changed hands a few times as a Moore triple had the team up 36-34 and two free throws down the stretch by Davis sent the red, white and blue into the locker room up 38-36
Second Half:
- Hofman hit another three to start the scoring and he was fouled, hitting his free throw to extend the Titans lead to 42-36
- Two free throws by Moore had the team up seven, 44-37, with 17:19 to go
- A 10-0 Green Bay run tied the game at 47-all with 15 minutes remaining
- Sophomore Alonde LeGrand ended that with a drive to the rim and layup, but the Phoenix claimed the lead right back at 52-49, with 13:28 on the clock
- Green Bay extended the lead to seven, 62-55, but three free throws by Rose Jr., cut into that with nine minutes left
- Later on, four-straight free throws by Davis trimmed the deficit to just three, 67-64, with just over six minutes to go
- The Phoenix went ahead by as many as eight, 74-66, with just over five minutes on the clock when the Titans made one final run with Brandon slamming down two-straight possessions to cut it to four
- Two-straight jumpers by Davis had the team down by just two, 76-74, with 1:45 left
- Brandon's offensive rebound and layup made it a one-score game again at 78-76 with 1:01 remaining
- The Titans were able to force a Green Bay turnover under their basket and set up one last chance at a tie, with nine ticks on the clock, but a couple of shots did not go down
Game Notes:
- Detroit Mercy has now dropped 13 of the last 15 to Green Bay and trails the all-time series, 33-26
- The Titans have also dropped eight in a row at the Resch Center with their last win coming in 2012 as the red, white and blue is 8-20 all-time on the road in the series
- The last time the Titans swept both games in Wisconsin was in 2004-05, although that year, the games at Milwaukee and Green Bay were not played on the same trip, while the last time it happened back-to-back was in 1998-99
- Detroit Mercy came into the contest leading the HL and fifth in the country in free-throw percentage at 78.5 percentÂ
- Davis has now scored in double figures in all 49 games - reaching at least 17 points in 44 of them
- Davis passed Jon Goode and is now in 25th place all-time in scoring with 1,233 career points
- Brandon has been a monster on the glass in his last nine games, pulling down at least 10 rebounds in six contests and is averaging 12.1 in that span with a pair of double-doubles.
- Brandon came into the game leading the Horizon League with 1.26 blocks per game and 24 total swats on the year and added to that with a block
- Moore was in double figures for the third-straight game and seventh time this season
- Rose Jr., just had his season-high of 16 at Milwaukee last game
- Hofman's previous career-high was just three, twice this season
