Titans Drop Sunday Contest With Wright State

DETROIT (12/13/2020) -- The University of Detroit Mercy women's basketball team dropped its second Horizon League contest, falling 73-43 to Wright State from Calihan Hall on Sunday. It was the second game played in as many days to open the league slate for both teams.

The Titans were led in scoring by junior guard Kaela Webb, who had a game-high 17 points. Sophomore guard Markyia McCormick added 11 points for the Titans, hitting two 3-pointers, while sophomore forward Bridgid Fox tallied six points and a team-high seven rebounds.

Webb scored the first six Titan points of the contest, scoring off a jumper early in the game, before driving down the baseline and converting on a reverse layup midway through the first quarter. She then scored off another jumper as Detroit Mercy trailed by just two, 8-6, with 3:11 left in the first stanza. Wright State used a mini-run to take a nine-point advantage, 15-6, but the Titans made 3-of-4 free throws in the final minute of the first quarter with junior Cierra Harrison sinking both and McCormick adding a free throw make.

Harrison opened the scoring in the second quarter with a finger roll lay-up as Detroit Mercy trailed 18-11 in the first minute of the second quarter. The Titans had trouble getting the offense going, however, until McCormick made a jumper in the final minute of the first half and Fox converting on a pair of free throws as the Titans trailed at the break, 34-17.

McCormick made both of her 3-pointers early in the third quarter, hitting them in the opening three minutes of the second half, and also adding two free throws as she was up into double digits early in the third. Her second trey made it 43-26 with 7:02 remaining, but Wright State went on a run before Webb made a 3-pointer of her own off a feed from Sylare Starks.

Webb scored six points in the final quarter, adding a pair of free throws and two jumpers for the Titans. Webb and Fox were both 4-for-4 from the free-throw line in the game and as a team, Detroit Mercy was 18-for-26 (69.2%). The Titans made 11-of-43 field goal attempts (25.6%), while sinking 3-of-15 from beyond the arc. The Titans had eight steals in the game, two each by McCormick and junior guard Alicia Norman.

In addition to Fox's seven rebounds, which tied a season-high, junior forward Nicole Johanson added five caroms for the red, white and blue.

Wright State held the edge in rebounding, 41-29, and shot 50.9% in the game, but just 4-of-14 (28.6%) from outside the 3-point arc. The Raiders didn't have a player in double figures, with three players scoring nine points -- Angel Baker, Jada Roberson and K.K. White. The Titans did well to hold Baker in check during the series as the All-Horizon League guard scored just 16 points total across two games.
