Men's Lacrosse Topped By Marquette

PONTIAC, Mich. (2/22/2020) -- Junior Brett Erskine tallied his second hat trick of the season - and fifth of his career - to lead the Titan offense as the University of Detroit Mercy men's lacrosse team was downed by Jesuit-rival Marquette, 18-6, at Ultimate Soccer Arenas on Saturday.

Senior Alex Akins had his first career goal along with a caused turnover and two ground balls. Sophomore AJ Van Voorhis and freshman Ryan Birney al scored, while senior Alex Jarzembowski won 14-of-25 faceoffs.

Junior Ollie Nigh picked up a team-high six ground balls, while junior Paul Manuszak corralled four. Senior Sam McClain posted two caused turnovers and a ground ball and junior Logan Shamblin made nine saves in net.

The Titans (2-2) led 1-0 early, but Marquette (3-1) was able to take a 3-2 lead after the first. Detroit Mery was within two again in the second down 5-3, but the Golden Eagles scored four in a row to take control of the contest.

Sophomore Cam Kostus and redshirt freshman Kyle Waters each registered an assist, while Erskine and freshman Kyle Loken added two ground balls.

Detroit Mercy was outshot, 47-30, but the ground balls were nearly even at 29-28,

The red, white and blue will now have almost two weeks off before playing its next game when Robert Morris visits the Motor City on Mar. 4. Game time is set for 7 p.m. at Titan Field, the first home lacrosse night game in school history.

First Period:
  • The Titans scored on an early Marquette penalty as Waters set up Birney at 14:20
  • Despite a Shamblin save and a couple of defensive stops, Marquette took a 3-1 lead with 9:13 left in the period
  • A caused turnover by McClain set up a fast break and Akins fired in his first career goal with 4:50 remaining
  • Marquette answered with a goal for a 4-2 lead

Second Period:
  • Shamblin made two more saves early on
  • Van Voorhis scored to cut the deficit to 5-3 with under six minutes left
  • The Golden Eagles then ended the period by scoring three-straight goals

Third Period:
  • Shamblin posted three saves, but Marquette scored first for a 9-3 advantage at 10:06
  • After a faceoff win by Jarzembowski, Erskine scored his first of the day
  • Marquette then went on a spurt and took a 13-4 advantage when Erskine ended that off a feed from Kostus with three seconds on the clock

Fourth Period:
  • Each team was able to kill off a couple of penalties
  • Erskine recorded his hat trick with a goal with just over three minutes on the clock
  • McClain caused a turnover with 1:40 left

Game Notes
  • Detroit Mercy is now 1-6 all-time against Marquette, including 0-3 at home
  • The lone victory was on the road last season, 15-12
  • Detroit Mercy and Marquette are two of the eight Jesuit schools playing Division I lacrosse along with Canisius, Fairfield, Georgetown, Holy Cross, Loyola (Md.), and St. Joseph's
  • The Titans are now 7-15 all-time against the other Jesuit schools
  • Erskine now has 54 career goals for eighth in school history
  • Erskine scored four goals at Jacksonville in the season opener
  • Akins came into the contest with two career points on two assists, both against Canisius as a freshman and sophomore
  • Akins now has 43 caused turnovers for sixth in school history
  • Manuszak now has 112 ground balls. 
  • Jarzembowski has now won double-digit faceoffs in 31 career games, including 11 games with 15 or more faceoffs wins and three with 20 or more
