En Fuego As Davis Hits For Season-High 43 In Comeback Victory At IUPUI

INDIANAPOLIS (2/29/2020) -- Sophomore Antoine Davis was unstoppable today, pouring in a season-high 43 points and the Titans used some clutch free throws down the stretch to win in come-from-behind fashion, 90-88, at IUPUI on Saturday.

The 43 points marked the second-most in his career behind the 48 he had against Wright State as a freshman. It is the 19th 40-point game in the history of Titan basketball. Davis also had 42 points in a win over Loyola Maryland last season as he is just the fifth Titan to have at least two 40-point games in their career.

Sophomore Marquis Moore tallied 16 points and eight rebounds and sophomore Chris Brandon posted six points and a team-high 10 boards.

Detroit Mercy (8-23, 6-12 HL) once trailed IUPUI (7-24, 3-15 HL) by nine in the second half, 68-59, but with Davis - who had 22 points in the first half alone - unconscious from the field and the rest of the Titans contributing with timely stops, rebounds and free throws, the red, white and blue were able to overcome that deficit.

The game was back and forth early on as neither team had more than a four-point lead and was tied at 44-all at the break.

In the second half, the teams traded leads again until IUPUI built a nine-point lead, 68-59, with 12:42 left. The Titans started to chip away with four-straight points from Davis and were down by just one, 73-72, after a 3-pointer from junior Jordan Gorman with 9:22 to go. Davis would nail a triple for a 77-76 lead at the nine-minute mark, but both teams once again traded the lead for the next eight minutes until Moore hit a free throw for an 85-84 lead at 1:13.

The Titans would stiffen up their defense and Moore, sophomore Boe Nguidjol and Davis would get the team the win with free throws in the final minute.

Nguidjol ended with nine points and five rebounds, while junior Dwayne Rose Jr. added eight points. Gorman recorded five points and a career-high four assists and three steals.

First Period:
  • Rose Jr. had the first score and a jumper by Davis made it 4-3
  • A 3-pointer by Davis and a layup had the Titans on top 13-9, six minutes in

  • Davis knotted the game at 18-18 with a basket at 9:26
  • Davis then gave the team a 29-28 lead with three free throws and a basket by Moore had the red, white and blue up 31-28 with 5:46 left
  • Nguidjol hit a triple to bring the team within one, 37-36, at the 3:27 mark
  • Back-to-back baskets by Gorman and Davis tied it at 42-all with 1:51 left
  • Gorman came up with a steal and that led to Davis with the pass to Nguidjol and his layup tied the contest at 44-all at the break

  • An early jumper by Davis had the Titans out in front by two, 46-44
  • A triple by Moore made it 49-48 with 19 minutes to go
  • A layup by Nguidjol and a three by Davis had the Titans up 55-564 with 15:35 left
  • IUPUI went up by nine, 68-59, but back-to-back baskets by Davis and Moore cut into that with 11:38 left
  • A free throw by Davis and then a triple from Davis had the team down just 70-67 with 11:30 left
  • Two free throws by Brandon and then a 3-pointer by Gorman pulled the team within one, 73-72, with 9:18 on the clock
  • Davis answered again with a layup and his sixth trifecta gave the team a 77-75 lead with 7:38 on the clock
  • Moore hit from distance to give the team an 82-80 lead and Brandon gave the team a lead again at 84-83 with a basket with 3:44 to go
