FAIRBORN, Ohio (2/6/2020) -- Four Titans scored in double figures, two recorded 20 point games and one had a double-double, but two long runs by Wright State made it difficult to overcome as the University of Detroit Mercy men's basketball team dropped a 98-86 contest on the road on Thursday night.
Davis posted a game-high 28 points and a career-best nine assists, scoring 22 in the second half. Junior
Dwayne Rose Jr. scored 20 points and grabbed a career-best eight rebounds, sophomore
Chris Brandon scored 12 points with a game-high 14 boards and senior
Justin Miller added 14 points off the bench.
Detroit Mercy (6-18, 4-7 HL) saw Wright State (20-5, 10-2 HL) score the game's first eight points and led by as many as 22 points in the second half, 60-38 at the 16:14 mark, before the red, white and blue made a furious run to get within three, 86-83, with 1:30 left.
The Titans trailed 33-13 at one point in the first half, but went on a 10-0 run and an 18-8 spurt, highlighted by three 3-pointers from Miller to trim the deficit to 38-31 late in the period.
In the second half, Wright State went up by 22, but the Titans kept fighting and an 11-0 run eventually pulled the team back within seven, 66-59, with 11:38 left. The Titans made it a four-point game at 69-65 at the 9:31 mark, before WSU went on another scoring spurt to go up by double digits.
The red, white and blue made one final charge as Davis was hitting shots from the outside and Rose Jr., getting inside and draining some from distance. The Titans would then see Miller and Davis sink free throws and it was a one-score game, 86-83, with just under two minutes left, but the Raiders then went on a 12-0 run.
The Titans shot 45.4 percent from the field, including 50.0 percent in the second half, where Detroit Mercy was 9-of-15 from behind the arc. The Titans also outrebounded the Raiders, 37-30, and posted 14 assists.
Detroit Mercy will be back in action on Saturday as the Titans visit NKU in a 7 p.m. tip.
First Half:
- Wright State started the game on an 8-0 run until freshman Sam Hofman buried a three
- The Raiders then led 19-3 at the 14:06 mark
- Brandon then had back-to-back baskets, getting to the rim on both
- Wright State then led 36-15 with 6:12 on the clock when the Titans went on a 10-0 run
- Miller started it with a three before Davis had back-to-back buckets and then Miller went to the rim and was fouled, completing the three-point play to get the team back within 11, 36-25, with 3:55 on the clock
- Miller added another three to make it 38-28 and another from distance pulled the team within seven, 38-31, with 3:10 on the clock
- Brandon got inside for a layup to make the score 42-33 with 1:25 on the clock, before WSU scored the last five points in the half
Second Half:
- Davis started the half with his first triple
- Wright State then went on another spurt to make it 58-36 with 16:25 left
- A layup by Davis and a 3-pointer by Rose Jr. cut it to 62-46 with 14:10 left
- The Titans then went on an 11-0 run started and ended with senior graduate Brad Calipari 3-pointers and the team with within seven, 66-59, at the 11:38 mark
- A jumper by Davis and then a long three had the red, white and blue down just four, 69-65, with 9:31 left
- WSU would go on a 9-2 run to extend the lead to 78-67 with 6:30 remaining
- Rose Jr. twice got the team within eight hitting a three for 78-70 and then getting to the rim for a basket and free throw to cut it to 80-72 with 5:01 remaining
- Another Rose Jr. trimmed it to just six, 80-74, at the 5:09 mark
- Davis had a basket and then drained a triple to make it a five-point game, 84-79, with 3:38 on the clock
- Two free throws by Miller and then a pair by Davis had the Titans down by just one possession, 86-83, at the 1:57 mark
- Wright State then scored on a 12-0 run to pull out the win
Game Notes:
- The Raiders lead the all-time series, 34-27, including a 19-9 advantage at home
- The last time the Titans had two players score 20 or more in a game was last season's home win over IUPUI as Josh McFolley had 23 and Davis had 20
- David came into the game third in the country and leading the Horizon League in scoring at 23.3 points per game and now has 16 games with 20 or more points on the season and 39 in his career
- The nine assists by Davis were the most since Jeremaine Jackson Jr. had 13 against Siena Heights in 2017 and the most for the Titans against a DI team since McFolley had nine versus Purdue Fort Wayne in 2016
- Davis now has 1,327 points, just 14 shy of 22nd place in school history
- Brandon had just eight points and six rebounds in the first meeting
- Brandon now has four double-doubles on the year
- Brandon has now pulled down at least 10 rebounds in eight contests in the last 13 games
- Miller's career-high in 3-pointers was four accomplished four times, including at Kansas in 2018, where he also scored a career-high 22 as a member of Louisiana Lafayette
- Calipari has hit at least two 3-pointers in 12 games on the year
- Rose Jr. now has scored in double figures four times in the last six games
