Detroit Mercy Action For COVID-19, Athletic Competition Statements

University actions from the above letter

The following decisions have been made by the University's COVID-19 Response Team.

McNichols Campus

Classes Suspended until March 17

All classes on the McNichols Campus have been suspended through Tuesday, March 17 (on-campus, face-to-face and online courses). This period will be used by faculty to transition course material to the University's online teaching platform.

Moving to online classes March 18

McNichols classes will move to all online beginning March 18.
For clinicals, externships, internships, etc., College and School Deans and faculty may be sending out directives. If you have a question about these, please contact your College or School dean's office.

Online Instruction

To assist faculty in transitioning to online instruction, the Instructional Design Studio will offer sessions on how to convert courses to the online format. The session schedule will be shared as soon as it is available.

Campus Housing and Dining

Campus housing remains open, but students who do not need to be on campus will be strongly encouraged to return to their permanent place of residence, if possible. For those unable to go home to an off-campus location, we will continue to fully support students in our campus housing and dining facilities.
Campus Dining will maintain their normal hours. Safe dining practices, including social distancing, are recommended. Campus Dining will encourage students to opt for to-go/takeout options and are making the necessary preparations to accommodate this shift.

Faculty and Staff

All employees must report to work based on their normal work schedule. Human Resources will be providing further guidelines on other necessary policy adjustments. Employees who are ill, especially if they exhibit symptoms of COVID-19, are instructed to stay home.

Events

All events with 100 people or more will be canceled to adhere to the CDC's recommendation for social distancing. Deans and vice presidents may consider exceptions, but safety must remain our top priority. Events with less than 100 people are also discouraged. Communications regarding the upcoming commencement ceremonies will be forthcoming.

Travel

All university-sponsored domestic and international travel is prohibited.

The campus will remain open.

Athletics

Detroit Mercy athletics initially decided to suspend all practice, competition, recruiting and athletic travel until March 31. Based on the Horizon League's decision to cancel the spring sports season on March 16, Detroit Mercy athletics will move forward on cancelling all spring sports. The cancellation includes men's lacrosse that plays in the MAAC and women's lacrosse that plays in the Southern Conference.

HORIZON LEAGUE

(UPDATED - 3/16/20) - Guided by its core value of student-athlete well-being and with the further developments in the outbreak of COVID-19, the Horizon League Board of Directors in collaboration with the League's Council, decided that all Horizon League competition, both conference and non-conference, and all Horizon League Championships are canceled for the remainder of the academic year.

Individual institutions will make decisions regarding practice and recruiting in accordance with NCAA regulations, state and institutional guidelines.

The voting members of the Horizon League Board of Directors are comprised of the 10 member institutions' chief executive officers. The Council consists of the 10 member institutions' athletic directors, chairpersons of the Senior Woman's Administrators and Faculty Athletic Representatives and a student-athlete.

MAAC

(March 12, 2020) - In response to the immediate and ever-growing concerns regarding the COVID-19 pandemic, the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference and its Council of Presidents have unanimously decided to cancel the remainder of its current conference tournament currently being held in Atlantic City, New Jersey.

In addition, based upon the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference membership's ongoing commitment to the health and safety of our student athletes and athletic department representatives and as a result of the growing national concern of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Council of Presidents has also unanimously voted to cancel all spring sports competitions, practices (including captain's practices), effective tomorrow, March 13th and other athletic related activities for the remainder of the 2020 Spring semester.

The Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Council of Presidents regrettably decided to make these challenging decisions to prioritize the health and safety of our student-athletes and out of concern for the broader health and well-being of our various school communities.

SOUTHERN CONFERENCE

(Updated March 3/17/2020) - By unanimous votes of the league's Council of Presidents and directors of athletics, the Southern Conference is canceling all athletics-related activities for the remainder of the 2019-20 academic year, including competition, championships, organized practices and meetings, due to the ongoing threat of the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic, Commissioner Jim Schaus announced Tuesday.

"With the recent developments during this unprecedented coronavirus crisis, the membership feels it is necessary to revise our position and cancel all athletic related activities for the spring," Schaus said. "The health and safety of student-athletes, coaches, staff and fans is of utmost importance and discontinuing all activities is prudent and necessary.

"My heart breaks for those student-athletes who will not get the opportunity to compete in Southern Conference regular-season and championship events this year as well as some potentially in NCAA championships. However, protecting their health will always be most important and supporting their welfare our hallmark.

"I am proud of our Southern Conference institutions on how we have worked together during this crisis. This has certainly been challenging, with more to come, but I know that we will persevere and return to future excellence."

NCAA

(March 12, 2020) - NCAA released the following statement Thursday, cancelling all remaining winter and spring championships for 2020:

Today, NCAA President Mark
Emmert and the Board of Governors canceled the Division I men's and women's 2020 basketball tournaments, as well as all remaining winter and spring NCAA championships. This decision is based on the evolving COVID-19 public health threat, our ability to ensure the events do not contribute to spread of the pandemic, and the impracticality of hosting such events at any time during this academic year given ongoing decisions by other entities.
