Titans 3-Point Barrage Not Enough in Road Setback to Phoenix

GREEN BAY, Wis. (1/8/2021) -- The University of Detroit Mercy women's basketball squad knocked down 11 3-pointers and junior guard Kaela Webb scored a game-high 22 points, but the Titans dropped a 64-49 road contest with host Green Bay from the Kress Events Center on Friday.

Detroit Mercy was very efficient from long range in the contest, hitting 11-of-23 from behind the arc for 47.6%. The Titans shot 7-of-11 (63.6%) from beyond the arc in the second half alone and at one point made four-straight attempts in the third stanza.

Webb knocked down five of the 11 triples for the Titans and scored more than 20 points for the fifth time in the 2020-21 season. Sophomore forward Bridgid Fox added seven points and four rebounds, senior Aly Reiff had six points, a team-high seven rebounds and four assists and junior Cierra Harrison tallied six points and three steals for the red, white and blue.

Green Bay scored the game's first eight points, before the Titans went on a 12-5 run behind the strength of a pair of Reiff 3-pointers, which were both assisted by sophomore guard Annika Corcoran. Webb also had a 3-pointer during that stretch as Detroit Mercy trailed 13-12 with 2:29 left in the opening frame.

The Titans trailed 18-12 after one and 20-12 early in the second quarter before a series of good passes ended with Fox finishing on an easy lay-up to cut into the Green Bay lead, 20-14, early in the second. The Phoenix would score the next series of buckets, before the Titans scored the final two field goals of the first half with sophomore Sammiyah Hoskin scoring on a putback after an offensive board and Webb sinking her second trey of the contest. At the halftime break, the Titans trailed 34-19.

The 3-point barrage for the Titans picked up steam in the second half as Webb connected on a triple from the wing just 65 seconds into the third quarter and then Harrison made back-to-back 3-pointers within 70 seconds of each other as the Titans used a 9-2 run to pull within 10 points, 38-28.

After two Green Bay buckets, Webb had back-to-back field goals, sinking a pull-up jumper and then scoring off a Harrison steal. Sophomore guard Sylare Starks made Detroit Mercy's fourth consecutive 3-point attempt late in the stanza as Detroit Mercy trailed after three, 48-35, also out-scoring Green Bay in the third, 16-14. The Titans went 4-of-5 from long range in the third quarter.

Fox continued the efficient 3-point shooting early in the fourth quarter, making her first long-range shot of the season as the Titans trailed Green Bay 52-38 with 7:23 remaining in the game. Later in the quarter, Reiff grabbed one of her four offensive rebounds and immediately found Webb at the top of the key and Webb drilled her fourth 3-pointer of the contest with 3:10 left.

Webb would go on to sink her fifth 3-pointer and Detroit Mercy's 11th triple of the game in the closing seconds of the contest. The 11 treys were just one shy of a season-high.

The Titans were even with Green Bay in scoring in the second half (30-30) and also were knotted with the Phoenix in turnovers (15-15), as the Titans held the edge in steals (12-6). Both teams had 10 offensive rebounds with the Phoenix edging the Titans in total rebounds, 39-30. The red, white and blue had 14 assists.
