FORT WAYNE, Ind. (10/13/2021) -- The University of Detroit Mercy men's soccer team picked up three very important points in Horizon League play with a 2-0 road win against the Purdue Fort Wayne Mastodons on Wednesday night.
Sophomore
Samory Powder tallied his first career multi-goal game, scoring early in the first half and putting the game away with a strike in the second period, while redshirt-freshman goalkeeper
Jonathan Kliewer made four stops on the night to register his third clean sheet of the year.
The Titans (3-4-4, 2-2-2 HL) got on the board first in the 11th minute as Powder headed the ball through off a free kick feed from outside the box. Senior
Ryan Halloran picked up the assist, his first of the year and third point overall. Powder's goal was one of four balls played on net by the Titans' offense in the first half, as all four shot attempts went on target.
Purdue Fort Wayne (3-8-1, 1-5-0 HL) took just three shots in the first half, with two finding their way on net.
In the second half, Powder picked up right where he left off, netting his second of the game and third of the year in the 60th minute of the match. He would win the ball near midfield off a goal kick and then weaved his way past a couple of defenders before taking a shot from the outside that skipped past the keeper.
Detroit Mercy's offense would finish the night with 11 shots, placing six on goal. Powder led the Titans with five shots, while juniors
Rocco Galati and
Matthew Andres had two apiece, and redshirt-senior
Demetri Pliakos and junior
Nick Lulaj each had one.
After leaving Fort Wayne with three points in league play, the red, white, and blue will return home this Saturday, Oct. 16, for a match with the Milwaukee Panthers at 7:00 p.m.
