BOSTON (11/30/2021) -- Senior
Antoine Davis scored a game-high 23 points and the Titans cut a 16-point deficit down to just one twice, but couldn't complete the comeback as the University of Detroit Mercy men's basketball team fell at Northeastern, 66-56, on Tuesday night.
With his 23 points, Davis now has 2,182 career points as he passed John Long for second place in school history.
Davis also added four rebounds, three assists and two steals. Junior
Madut Akec scored 10 points with three rebounds and three steals and senior
Prince Oduro had five points and a team and season-high eight rebounds.
The Titans (0-6) saw the Huskies (4-4) start the game on a 9-0 run and take a 16-point lead in the first half at 24-8. Detroit Mercy would chip away after that and went into the half down by 11, 36-25.
In the second half, the Titans started to get on track offensively, hitting four of their first eight shots, and were within six, 40-34, just four minutes in. The red, white and blue kept the effort going and back-to-back baskets off a defensive stop and a steal and layup by Akec had the team down by just two, 51-49, midway through the half.
Detroit Mercy then made it a one-point game twice, first off an Oduro free throw at 51-50 and then with another layup from Akec that had the score at 53-52 with 8:23 remaining. Northeastern would go on an 8-0 spurt and the Titans could not get back within one possession.
Senior
Matt Johnson had seven points and four rebounds, while senior
Willy Isiani scored seven points with five rebounds and two steals.
The Titans shot 37.7% from the floor with seven 3-pointers, but only got to the line four times, sinking three, while coming away with eight steals.
Detroit Mercy will now get ready for conference play as the Titans open the league portion of their schedule on Thursday at IUPUI in a 7:00 p.m. tip.
First Half:
- Northeastern started the game on a 9-0 run
- Davis ended that with a jumper and Isiani was fouled and hit two free throws for four in a row
- Oduro would get inside for a layup to make it 15-8 at the 10:55 mark
- The Huskies then went on a 9-0 run to extend the deficit to 24-8 with 6:59 left
- Oduro ended that with a basket inside and then Isiani and Davis followed with 3-pointers to make it 24-16 at 5:29
- Isiani got an offensive rebound and putback and Davis was able to knock down another shot to pull the team within eight, 30-22, with 2:04 remaining
- Davis nailed a three at the end of the half to make it 36-25 at the break and that bucket gave him second place in school history with 2,169 points
Second Half:
- Johnson started the half with a 3-pointer
- Akec had a basket and then McAdoo followed with an offensive rebound and layup and the run went to six-straight as Akec had a steal and a layup to get the red, white and blue within six, 40-34, with 16:30 left
- Davis buried a 3-pointer to make it 47-40 at the 13:42 mark and another three had the team down by just six, 49-43, with 12:55 left
- After that, Davis fed Johnson and the layup cut it to 49-45
- Akec was able to get to the basket for a layup and it was a four-point game and after a steal, Akec was able to get to the rim again and it was 51-49 with 10 min left
- The Titans pulled within one after that as an Oduro free throw cut it to 51-50 and a jumper from Akec had it 53-52 with 8:35 on the clock
- The Huskies would go on an 8-0 run to jump back in front, 61-52, with 4:30 remaining
- Davis ended that with a jumper and it was 61-54 with three minutes left
- Both teams combined for just seven points the rest of the way

- The all-time series is now tied at 3-3 and are 1-2 at Matthews Arena
- Davis now has 63 career 20-point games, 21 career 30-point outings and four 40-point contests in just 88 collegiate games and has also scored in double figures in all 88 games - reaching at least 17 points in 70 of them
- Davis has 2,182 career points and is 137 behind Rashad Phillips (2,319) for the school record and fifth in Horizon League history
- Davis has now connected on a 3-pointer in 84 of his 88 collegiate games and also has 48 career games with four or more triples, 17 with six or more, nine games with seven or more, and has thrice connected on 10 in his career, tying a school record as well as breaking a conference tournament record

- Earlier in the day, the Titans announced the signing of Sonny Johnson to a national letter of intent, a a 5-10 guard out of Cleveland, Ohio, who is a three-star prospect and had offers from several high-profile schools including Michigan State, Nebraska and Penn State
