DETROIT (11/4/2021) - The Detroit Mercy women's basketball team placed four players in double figures as senior
Monique Pruitt scored a team-high 15 points followed by 14 points from graduate student
Janna Lewis and 11 points each from graduate students
Sydney Searcy and
Tori Powell and the Titans fell 73-66 in overtime to cross-town foe Wayne State in exhibition action on Thursday night at Calihan Hall.
Irena Mura and Searcy lead Detroit Mercy on the glass grabbing seven rebounds each. The Titan turned it up on the defensive end with 17 steals and 27 points off 25 WSU turnovers. Searcy and Lewis had three steals while
Daija Moses,
Lucia Fleta Robles,
Sonia Pereda and Pruitt had two each.
After trailing 36-33 at the half, back-to-back layups from Pruitt and Powell followed by a jumper from Pruitt and Moses layup capped off an 8-0 run giving the Titans the lead at 63-56 with 1:55 left in regulation.
However, WSU would not go away as the Warriors connected on a 3-pointer, got a steal and ensuing layup to pull within two points at 63-61. Powell made a driving layup attempt and was fouled with seven seconds to go. However, she missed both free throws giving WSU a chance with just five seconds left. WSU's Rebecca Fugate launched a three-point attempt that rimmed out with the rebound going right to Shea Tripp who made a layup as time expired tying the game and sending it into overtime at 63-63.
With new life, it was all Wayne State in the overtime as the Warriors opened overtime on a 9-0 run and held the Titans scoreless until a 3-ball from Pruitt ended the drought with 27 seconds remaining.
Trailing 15-6 in the first, the Titans closed out the first quarter on a 9-3 run to pull within three points at 18-15. The run continued in the second quarter with a 13-6 spurt to take a 28-24 lead by the media timeout. However, Wayne State responded by closing out the quarter on a 12-5 to take a 36-33 lead in the locker room at halftime.
