Detroit Mercy Drops Heartbreaker to UIC in Double Overtime in #HLMSOC Quarterfinals

Bandyk scores goal off penalty kick, Kliewer makes career-high nine saves

CHICAGO (11/7/21) - Redshirt senior Kyle Bandyk scored the equalizing goal in the second half off a penalty kick but it was not enough as the No. 5 Detroit Mercy Titans fell 2-1 in double overtime at No. 4 UIC as the Flames got the golden goal to advance in Horizon League championship quarterfinal action on Sunday afternoon. Redshirt freshman and #HLMSOC Goalkeeper of the Year Jonathan Kliewer was solid in net making a season and career-high nine saves.

UIC wasted little time taking a 1-0 lead just three minutes into the game. The Flames were close to taking a 2-0 lead on a breakaway but Kliewer stood his ground and turned aside Andres Moreno's shot in the 33rd minute.

Ryan Pierson almost got the equalizer in the 41st minute but his shot was saved by UIC keeper Andres Vasquez.

In the second half, the Titans finally broke through with the equalizer as Bandyk connected on a penalty kick in the 70th minute.

Just nine minutes later, Detroit Mercy had its best chance to take the lead. Samory Powder made a run into the box and fired a shot off a pass that beat Vasquez clean to the left side but a UIC defender was standing on the goal line and made the team save, preventing the goal and keeping the game tied at 1-1.

In the second overtime, UIC got the golden goal from Pau Mateo to seal the win.
