Titans Race Past Broncos In Home Opener

Two Titans Tally Double-Doubles

DETROIT (12/10/2021) -- Four Titans scored in double figures, two Titans had double-doubles and the red, white and blue never trailed in the contest as the University of Detroit Mercy men's basketball team downed in-state rival Western Michigan, 83-64, on Saturday afternoon at Calihan Hall.

Senior Antoine Davis tallied 20 points and tied his career-high with 10 assists for his second double-double of the year and his career. He was 7-of-19 from the field with six 3-pointers.

Junior Madut Akec had 18 points and a team-high 12 rebounds with three assists as he was 8-of-14 from the field. Senior Willy Isiani scored a season-best 15 points hitting 5-of-7 from the field with three 3-pointers and senior Matt Johnson added 11 points, five rebounds, two assists and two steals. 

Detroit Mercy (3-7, 2-0 HL) scored the game's first five points and had a 10-point lead, 12-2, just five minutes in. The Titans would open as much as a 12-point lead in the first half, but Western Michigan (3-6, 0-0 MAC) did go on an 8-0 run to trim the lead to two, 27-25. 

The Titans led by seven at the break, 36-29, and then in the second half, the offense kicked it into another gearing shooting 51.4% from the field and 11-of-20 from downtown as they increased their lead to as many as 20. 

Detroit Mercy ended the game shooting 45.6% overall (31-of-68) and 41.% from the outside (15-of-38). 

Graduate senior DJ Harvey posted seven points and grabbed a season-high eight rebounds, while graduate senior Kevin McAdoo had three points, three boards and two assists.

The Titans will now have a week off before getting back on the court when Central Michigan comes to town next Sunday, Dec. 19, in a 1:00 p.m. tip. 

First Half:
  • Akec got inside for a layup and Davis nailed a three for a quick 5-0 lead
  • After a WMU basket, Johnson hit a jumper and Harvey hit from distance for a 10-2 lead at the 16:18 mark
  • Two free throws from Isiani and it was a 12-2 Titan advantage just five minutes in
  • Another layup from Akec and a triple from junior Noah Waterman and the Titans led by double digits again, 17-5, with 13:24 remaining
  • Akec got inside for another basket and a 21-10 advantage with 11:26 left
  • Davis drilled a triple for a 26-14 lead with 8:34 left
  • An 11-1 run by the Broncos cut the lead to 27-25 with 4:25 on the clock
  • Johnson ended that with two free throws and then with three offensive rebounds, Akec powered his way to the rim for a score and a 31-25 lead with three minutes to go
  • Akec later got inside for a floater and was fouled and his free throw had the Titans up 34-27 with 2:37 left
  • Off a steal, by Davis, he found Johnson and he slammed it in for a 36-27 advantage and the Titans led at the break, 36-29

Second Half:
  • Akec and Davis hit back-to-back 3-pointers to raise the lead to double-digits again at 47-36 with 15:40 left 
  • Isiani nailed a three and then Akec got inside for a layup and it was 52-41 with 13:44 to go
  • Another trey from Isiani and the red, white and blue had a 12-point advantage, 55-43, with 11:49 remaining
  • Johnson and Davis connected on back-to-back 3-pointers and it was 61-43 with 10:44 left
  • Davis hit from long range again and a layup from graduate senior Buay Koka and the Titans had a 70-51 advantage with 6:37 remaining
  • Detroit Mercy took a 20-point lead, 78-58, with 2:10 left as Isiani drained a three
  • Graduate senior Kevin McAdoo ended the scoring with a triple at the end

Game Notes:
  • The seven-game homestand is the most since Detroit Mercy had eight in a row at home in the 1987-88 campaign
  • The Titans now lead the overall series, 29-26, including 19-10 at home
  • The 15, 3-pointers tied a season-high with the 15 the Titans had at Hofstra
  • The 21 assists were the most since they had 21 at Oakland last season
  • The 31 field goals were the most since they were 31-of-47 in the win over Green Bay last year
  • The last time the Titans had two players with double-doubles was on Jan. 5, 2018, when Kameron Chatman (13 pts., 12 reb.) and Tariq Jones (15 pts., 10 reb.) against Wright State
  • Davis tied his career-high with the 10 assists he had at IUPUI and he also has two double-doubles
  • Akec now has four double-doubles on the year
  • Isiani was in double figures for the second-straight game and the most since he netted 15 at home against Kent State last year
  • Davis came into the game third in the nation in total 3-pointers, fourth in scoring and 3-point field goals per game, sixth in minutes played and seventh in free-throw percentage 
  • Davis now has 64 career 20-point games, 21 career 30-point outings and four 40-point contests in just 92 collegiate games and has also scored in double figures in all 92 games - reaching at least 17 points in 74 of them as he is now seventh all-time in NCAA history for most consecutive games in double figures
  • Davis has connected on a 3-pointer in 88 of his 92 collegiate games and also has 50 career games with four or more triples, 18 with six or more, nine games with seven or more, and has thrice connected on 10 in his career, tying a school record as well as breaking a conference tournament record
  • Davis now has 2,259 career points and is just 60 in back of Rashad Phillips for the all-time school mark
