DETROIT (12/29/2021) -- The University of Detroit Mercy men's and women's basketball games this weekend have been canceled due to COVID-19 implications resulting from positive cases within the Detroit Mercy programs.
The home men's games against Youngstown State on Dec. 30 and Robert Morris on Jan. 1 and the women's games at Green Bay (Dec. 30) and at Milwaukee (Jan. 1) are all canceled.
HORIZON LEAGUE UPDATE
INDIANAPOLIS – The Horizon League announced Wednesday updates to this week's men's and women's basketball schedule.
Detroit Mercy's men's and women's basketball's scheduled contests for Dec. 30 and Jan. 1 have been canceled. In addition, UIC women's basketball's scheduled contests for Dec. 31 and Jan. 2 have been canceled.
Horizon League policy, vetted by multiple membership groups and approved by the Horizon League Council, states that contests that are canceled due to COVID-19 are to be considered forfeits unless deemed a no contest by the Commissioner. League policy authorizes the Commissioner to deem a cancellation a no-contest when the involved institution can demonstrate that extraordinary circumstances led to the cancellation. Given the surge in positive cases due to the Omicron variant, the Council agreed that a high volume of breakthrough cases among vaccinated individuals is considered extraordinary.
Detroit Mercy's men's basketball and UIC women's basketball sought to deem missed competition this week no contests since both teams were unable to field teams due to breakthrough cases among vaccinated student-athletes. Commissioner Julie Roe Lach granted the requested relief noting that both teams satisfied the extraordinary standard.
Detroit Mercy women's basketball also sought to deem missed competition this week no contests but relief was not granted as circumstances did not meet the extraordinary threshold.
The announcement follows positive COVID-19 tests within the UIC women's basketball, Detroit Mercy men's basketball and Detroit Mercy women's basketball tier I individuals.
If needed, additional updates to the schedule will be announced at a later date.
