FORT WAYNE, Ind. (3/30/2021) -- University of Detroit Mercy men's soccer forward
Matthew Andres scored his first collegiate goal for the Titans in the second half of Tuesday's road match, but the red, white and blue dropped a 4-2 contest to Purdue Fort Wayne from the Hefner Soccer Complex.
Andres scored off a free kick for the Titans in the 50th minute of the match to cut the deficit to 2-1 after the host Mastodons scored two first-half goals. Purdue Fort Wayne scored two goals later in the second half before Titan junior
Ryan Pierson fired in a goal off a corner kick in the 90th minute of the contest. It was Pierson's first goal of the 2021 season.
The Titans (2-5, 2-5 Horizon League), coming off a two-match pause due to Covid-19 protocols within the program, out-shot Purdue Fort Wayne in the match, 18-12. The shot advantage for the Titans included a 15-3 ledger in the second half alone for the red, white and blue. The Titans also had 10 corner kicks against just two for the Mastodons.
Andres had three shots and a team-best three shots on goal for the Titans. Freshman forward
Samory Powder added four shots, two shots on goal, while seniors
Mohamad Miri and
Demetri Pliakos both fired two shots in the contest.
Redshirt junior goalkeeper
Devin Mendez made four saves in net for the red, white and blue, while junior
Reggie Spencer made his collegiate debut in the second half for Detroit Mercy, seeing 18-plus minutes of playing time and not allowing a Purdue Fort Wayne goal.
