YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (4/17/2021) -- The University of Detroit Mercy women's lacrosse team established a new program record for goals in a game as the Titans won their second-straight road contest with a 24-12 victory at Youngstown State on Saturday.
The 24 goals in the contest was a new school record for the squad, one more than the previous mark which was achieved three different times. Detroit Mercy scored early and often during the contest and built up a 16-5 halftime advantage over the host Penguins from the Covelli Sports Complex.
The Titans (2-2, 2-2 Mid-American Conference) then scored on eight of their 10 shots in the second half to seal the victory. The Titans also dominated in the draw circle on Saturday, with the red, white and blue tallying a 16-6 advantage by halftime and 24-14 edge overall in the contest over YSU.
Senior midfielder
Taylor Cantelon set a new single-game school record for draw controls in a contest, recording 16 draw controls for the Titans, four better than the previous single-game mark in Titan history. Cantelon was integral in helping the Titans set up their offense quickly throughout the game.
Offensively, five Titans posted hat tricks in the game with junior midfielder
Elise Harder scoring a career-high six goals and totaling seven points overall. Senior attacker
Kamryn Corraro added five goals and tallied seven points, with sophomore attacker
Marina Butler and freshman attacker
Cat Kopchia both setting career-highs with four goals each. Kopchia had an assist for a career-best five points. Junior midfielder
Taryn McManus was the fifth Titan with a hat trick with three goals and two assists, also adding three draw controls.
The Titans were strong defensively as well, with three different goalkeepers combining for 10 saves. Sophomore GK
Hannah Shrader made four saves before halftime, senior
Maddie Johnson made five saves in the second half and freshman goalkeeper
MaKayla Nelson made one save in her collegiate debut for the red, white and blue.
YSU (1-6, 1-6 MAC) scored the first goal of the contest, but the Titans scored seven of the next eight to lead 7-2 at the 17:43 mark of the first half. Corraro, Harder and McManus each had two goals during that 7-1 stretch. After a YSU goal, Detroit Mercy would go on another big run, this time an 8-1 span as Detroit Mercy went ahead 15-4 with 4:53 remaining in the opening half. Six different Titans scored during the run, with Harder and Butler both scoring twice. Butler added her third goal of the game and the Titans' 16th just before the halftime break.
The Penguins scored the first two goals of the second half, however Detroit Mercy scored the next three to lead 19-7. Sophomore attacker
Annie Gilbert, who scored the game-winning goal at Akron earlier this week, got on the board and Corraro and Butler each followed with goals one minute apart. YSU would again close the gap to 10 goals, 19-9, but Detroit Mercy scored five of the next six goals to lead 24-10 with just 4:39 left in the contest.
The red, white and blue put 32-of-36 shot attempts on goal (88.9%) during the contest and also went 17-of-19 on clear attempts (89.4%) during the game. Detroit Mercy went a perfect 7-for-7 on free-position attempts in the contest with Harder and McManus each converting on a pair of chances.
Junior defender
Claire Conway had a team-high five ground balls for the Titans, while Corraro was credited with four GB. Harder scored on six of her seven shots on net, while Butler scored on all four shots on goal.
